The catastrophic volcanic eruption that smothered the Minoan civilisation 3,500 years ago buried ancient Thira and it was only in 1966 that its astonishing bronze age treasures were unearthed. What is left of this cataclysm is Santorini and its volcanic islands in the dazzling bay of Caldera.
