The Angel is an excellent hotel. The rooms are good quality and value for money provided you get a laterooms rate - I wouldn't pay full price. We found all the staff friendly. The only drawback anyone needs to be aware of is the limited amount of parking. However, we simply left our keys at reception and they sorted parking for us.

The hotel was very average with sighns of cost cutting. I don't think their charges are warranted - high price for nothing special except for superb location which, lets face it has little to do with the hotel

A very lovely hotel with luxurious rooms which were decorated in a modern style. Car parking was a little annoying as the hotel car park is very small & so in the morning we had to wait for a while for them to find our car as they had various different places that they moved cars to overnight. Breakfast service was quite slow however it was busy so can make some allowances. I would definately recommend this hotel, the room was one of the nicest I have ever stayed in.

Town centre location with easy access to everything. We had a non refurbished room and it was a good size and well furnished however the bathroom although clean was in need of a makeover with the shower requiring a degree of contortionist skill to avoid flooding the bathroom and the toilet flush needing a special knack, parking is also a minor issue with a pay and display directly in front of the hotel and the hotel staff shuttling your car about if you want to leave it without getting a ticket. Breakfast was very good with ample choice and good service. The staff were plentiful, courteous and well mannered. Overall my favourite of 6 hotels in the price range that I stayed in over the week.

We could not fault the hotel apart from the attitude of the barman in the evening who was somewhat reminicent of Basil Fawlty. It was therefore disappointing to meet him again at breakfast. However, his grumpiness became a source of amusement to us both. The decor and aesthetics were also most pleasing, and we would be happy to return in the future.

Very pleasureable stay. The room had everything that you needed and was very clean, far better than our expectation for the price paid. Also, close to the town centre and local amenities.

good hotel, restaurant had great food and even breakfast was far better than the average hotel. My one concern is the valet parking where no-one really knows where all the car keys are all the time (which saw ours go missing on more than one occassion).

Lovely hotel in a good central position for exploring the town. Parking is very limited at the hotel although there is a pay and display directly out the front which is free between 6pm and 8am.

Very good room and of high standard generally. One guest did have some issues with his room - but unable to comment on that. We had 6 rooms booked - and all were very good. Recommended.

A large hotel in the centre of town, a place of contrast; accommodation vs. restaurant. The accommodation, a little rundown with worn architrave, paintwork, and a mismatch of fitted carpeting throughout leading to a faded and stained pink area fitted to my bathroom floor. A bath without shower was a disappointment. Furnishing was arranged to fulfil, the basic requirement for a room; without an available flat surface to work. The restaurant however worked very well attractively furnished with an attentive staff, the food was excellent, and fresh.

Friendy relaxed atmosphere - not too formal. Fantastic food & well priced wine - well above average, however not cheap. Dinner was £50 a head including wine & service was attentive but not stuffy. The breakfasts were just as good with an inventive menu. I had a poached egg on a really generous amount of exceptionally good smoked salmon on a wholemeal bagel. We stayed in one of the older rooms overlooking the main square which are cheaper than other rooms which have been modernised and very good value - a word of warning. The room was on the top floor and given the heat wave was very hot. Also the traffic in the square is very noisy as it seems to bounce off the buildings and walls opposite. Next time we would choose a room with a less spectacular view perhaps, at the back & on a lower floor.Parking is very close by although when it gets full you may need to double park & leave keys with reception. We would recommend this hotel.

The Angel is a super hotel and we loved the building and - on the whole - the customer care, BUT when there is an annual Christmas fair it would be more than a little helpful for a revised access map pdf to appear on the hotel's website. I stayed at the hotel as I was visiting a conservator with a heavy item that I proposed taking from the car and keeping overnight in my room. Thank goodness I made good time on the journey and went to the conservator on Friday afternoon rather than Saturday morning! Although I had telephoned the hotel at the time of my online booking and been assured that there was parking (which looked fairly chaotic when I finally found it on Friday) getting anywhere near the hotel with a car was almost impossible due to the Christmas fair and was extremely stressful after a very long journey. Had I known about the Fair it is unlikely that I would have booked at The Angel in the circumstances of my visit. The response, at check-out, from the receptionist to whom I suggested a simple set of amended directions during fair time on the website was non-plused to say the least. Communication costs little, but in The Angel's case they will lose business if they don't improve it.

The reception staff were excellent, welcoming and very friendly. The rooms were similar to Travelodge lay out with more old style fittings - we did stay in the rooms they are soon to update, so that may change. The parking was unusual as the hotel car park is small and the staff move the cars about a lot - it's best not to watch as I saw my car nearly crashed into a passing vehicle by over keen staff. The poorest area was breakfast - the vegetarian option for cooked breakfast was just to take the meat off, so we basically ended up with half a breakfast.

Angel Hotel, Bury St. EdmundStayed one night at the hotel in May 2009. Booked in advance via and got an excellent deal. When I tried to check in late afternoon - around 6:00pm. They couldn't find my booking details. After a good 15-20 minutes (they served other guests). They still could not find my booking details from Laterooms. Luckily I had printed the confirmation details and took this with me. It was only after I showed them the booking printout I had with me before they allocate me a room. Otherwise I think they would have charged me the rack rate for the evening. The hotel has a wonderful character about it - I believe it used to be a coach inn in the 'oldern' days. Downside was there was no lift and I had to pull my luggage, briefcase etc up the steep flight of stairs and along narrow (and creeky) passageway to get to my room.My room was clean and functional. The design was art deco. I was told I was given an upgraded room FOC. The room had air- conditioning but the control panel was broken, hence it wasn't working. I rang the reception and reported this. A person came up - confirmed the room air-conditioning panel was broken and politely asked me to open the windows if I wanted to cool the room. Cheeky! Given the fact that at the time the weather was hot - so I had no choice.I ate in the hotel's restaurant that evening. The special set menu was good with local produce - local pork chop with vegetables. Desert was rubarb crumble tart. The breakfast in the morning was adequate although there wasn't a lot of choice and it was not buffet style. I had the 'full' english breakfast - one egg, one sausage, one bacon, half a tomarto, and one large mushroom with coffee and toast.Check out was satisfactory.I would rate the hotel as a 3 star hotel - it certainly is not a 4 star hotel.

A charming, traditional hotel in the heart of Bury St EdmundsThere is so much to recommend the Angel if you need somewhere to stay in Bury St Edmunds. The staff are polite and efficient, the food is excellent and the rooms are a good size and very comfortable. The hotel itself is situated in the heart of Bury, close to the Cathedral and the Abbey Gardens, and also the many shops, pubs and restaurants the town has to offer. All in all, the Angel is the perfect base for a relaxing weekend in a picturesque market town.

angelicDriven past The Angel, Bury St Edmunds many times and not stayed. Lovely views of new Cathedral Tower and convenience for magnificent Abbey Gardens. VERY friendly and attentive staff, they also park your car for you, and outstanding quality and quantity of food. Spacious rooms, well serviced and equipped. Good lounge facilities too. Quiet and comfortable. A thoroughly enjoyable 'one-nighter' for a special occasion.Revd Ed Elsey

Hotel is welcoming. I stayed in the unrefurbished part of the hotel where the rooms are dated but are clean. The plugs sockets on the desk are so low it's not possible to plug in lap tops or other equipment which has a moulded plug - you need to use a side lamp socket. Checking out was rather slow - only one member of staff on duty. The restaurant is lovely, the decor and ambience - and the food is delicious. Breakfast is a treat and worth getting up for.

Another great couple of nights at the Angel. The un-refurbished rooms are great value when compared to well known chain hotels. I prefer the older rooms with great views across Angel Square to the Abbey. They are just showing thier age with maturity, if you get my drift.Don't refurbish all the rooms, the 'Pickwick' rooms are great as they are!Thier food is also great, not cheap, but good value with great service. Will stay again next time I am in the area.

We had a room in the newly refurbished wing of the hotel. It was a lovely room , and the ensuite shower room was excellent with very nice fluffy towels and complimentary toiletries. The breakfast was very good - all staff were friendly but unintrusive. Only down side was not being able to turn off the noisy fan in the bathroom.

I was absolutely delighted with my stay. The hotel was first class in everything i experienced be it interior, food, service or value. The only slight complaint that i had is that the picture of the view of the hotel from the outside is out or date and the hotel was not covered in ivy as depicted. This apart it made for a fantastic trip in a very good location. Perfect for the Bury Festival.
