The Ateneo is set right in the city centre, just 100 meters from San Marco Square and 50 meters from La Fenice theatre. There is an enormous choice of restaurants and shops nearby. The Ateneo is set in an ancient building that was once the dwelling of eminent merchant families. Since 1959 it is an elegant and welcoming hotel that still boasts the charm of a typical 17th century Venetian residence. The establishment is comprised of 4 floors and overlooks a beautiful canal where gondolas only are allowed to sail.

Upon arrival we were told our booking was for 1 person, not 2. No clue why. X was IRATE but gave us a room. He then charged us for more than a double and we complained. He said we were trying to rip him off. We weren?t. He yelled at us and cursed at us in Italian. Thankfully my friend calmed me down, I was VERY offended. In the end we got a cheap room but ended up splurging on expensive wine to calm down. Rather have paid more at a nice hotel that treated us with kindness & respect.
