General Description

The Hotel Barocco overlooks Rome's Piazza Barberini, the fine square dominated by Bernini's wonderful baroque fountain of the sea-god Triton. This intimate and charming hotel is named after the architectural style that inspired some of the most breathtaking squares and monuments in the Eternal City. The fountain is a stone's throw from the hotel, so close in fact that from some of the rooms guests can see the tiny bees - a symbol of the Barberini family - sculpted on the dolphins. The entrance to the hotel is in Via della Purificazione, a quiet street off the square, and leads into an elegant foyer. The sofas in the reception area are covered in beige and orange-striped damask. There are oriental rugs on the floor and trompe l'oeil scenes of classical Rome on the walls. The air is even softly fragranced, in keeping with the philosophy of the Five Senses Hotels chain. This idea was first conceived three years ago by Franco Caruso the hotel's manager since 1991.

First stay in Rome. We had room in newer annex and it was BIG (especially, from what I understand, Rome standards). Sitting room, large bathroom with whirlpool tub and separate shower and bedroom with plenty of room. However, there was a stain on floor near bed - looked like juice stain from really good included breakfast (which included scrambled eggs, cakes, yogurts, cheese, cold cuts and good cappuccino). Anyways, it made me question the cleanliness of the carpet - but otherwise everything else was spotless. Small elevator was in original section of hotel, so needed to go up and down some additional steps to get to our room. Helpful, English speaking staff. Close to Metro and Hop on Hop Off bus. Walking distance to Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps. There was some construction noise as they are working on other rooms in the hotel, but only bothered us when we were getting dressed in morning - why would we stay in hotel during the day when in Rome? :-)

There isn't much room for the traveler with large pieces of luggage to get into the elevator. I have some mobility issues and may have developed some claustophobia upon entering the elevator. Thank goodness our room was on the first level since the elevator was not operating one night we came back to rest. My mother who also has mobility issues was on the second level need I say more. The front desk people were helpful and friendly and once they received all the necessary documents you were given your key. Upon entering the room you notice the musty odor in the room but once you put on the air you tend to forget the odor. The one complaint I do have is the rug was old and I'm sure a big contributor to the musty smell. Another complaint I had was that the hair dryer in the bathroom did not work and was broken. When I informed the front desk they came up and confirmed that "it is broken." I must say that my husband and I did enjoy the breakfast. It was filled with eggs, ham, a good selection of breads, jams, a variety of cheeses and beverages. All in all I guess I would stay at this hotel again if I were ever to return to Rome.
