This was a visit for a wedding anniversary and I had requested a lake view if possible but was given a small unsuitable room at the back of the hotel. When I complained I was advised that a lake view room was available at an extra cost of £10 per person per night. This we paid and it was worth it for the view but I cannot understand why this offer was not made at the start of the visit when I had already requested a lake view. The hotel was not busy. I was also surprised to find weeds growing on the side of the swimming pool - not pleasant. On the plus side the food was excellent the view of the lake very pretty and the staff pleasant but they could improve on their customer service on arrival.

Great location, attentive staff, extensive well maintained gardens and grounds, pleasant terrace, which is ideal for enjoying a Pimms on a sunny afternoon. Our room was in a newer part, recently modernised to a high standard and very comfortable. Small patio outside room gave onto secluded part of the gardens - very pleasant.Parts of the hotel (some of the public areas, parts of exterior and the 1970s swimming pool) are looking tired and are in need of renovation. But this is a huge old building, so apart from the pool (which was very clean and fine to use) it's more a case of 'faded grandeur' than 'worn out'. All in all a nice place to stay and reasonably priced.

I decided to treat my husband and myself to a weekend break in the Lake District. After travelling up to Bowness from Barnsley South Yorkshire we arrived feeling quite tired after working in the morning. When we saw the room that we were allocated we were extremely dissappointed as the floor was very creaky and the view of the air conditioning vent outside was not the view we anticipated. After speaking to reception, the young lady was very helpful and we were shown another room which was much better, with a lovely view out over the lake. In all we had a briliant time, good food and a comfortable bed, and good room service. We were fortunate to see the band playing suspended from the crane in the park on the Saturday evening and the fireworks display out on the lake all from our room window. Excellent time, friendly staff, excellent service. We look forward to returning to this hotel again soon.Kind RegardsMrs Tollerfield

This hotel is in a fantastic position with views over Lake Windermere, and within walking distance of everything in Bowness. Really enjoyed sitting outside having a couple of drinks in the early evening sunshine, enjoying the view. The breakfasts were ok, but no more than that. We didnt have dinner in the hotel as there are plenty of places to eat out in Bowness and we prefer to get out and about. The hotel does howver need a complete refurb. The rooms were tired and dated, and every second floorboard creaked loudly in both the room and the corridor outside.

I chose the hotel at short notice because it was one of very few offering one-night stays at weekends. Other reviewers gave me doubts as to the antiquity of the accommodation. We arrived late afternoon on the Saturday, having opted for the cheapest B&B offering....so we were delighted to be allocated a basement room in a modern annex, fully refurbished with flat screen tv, french windows onto the terrace with lake view, everything we could have asked for, and no creaky floorboards. £120 ain't very cheap for one night for two guests, but, hey, you only live once.

Hotel is set in a beautiful position, upon arrival we were upgraded to a lake view room, which was a pleasant surprise. Although i would not expect an ultra modern hotel inside a period building such as this i felt the decor was looking a little bit tired and could do with a freshen up. Food in the restaurant was great, a match for any of the village eateries. Staff were friendly and helpful. One other thing the hotel does not offer an ironing service but does provide an iron and board for a DIY iron, however this proved to be a poor alternative, make sure you ioron before arriving ! overall a good hotel.
