Close to the beach. Noisy, small rooms, no tubs, short hours for swimming pool usage. Not classy at all. Most of the time, there is no one at the front desk. Anyone could come in and out, with no security at all. Rooms are small, no tubs, some do not have a chair or table in the room. Very noisy. Access to the "fantastic" swimming pools is limited to 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Location is fairly decent, even if it is surrounded by a lot of homeless people and panhandlers. Staff is friendly.

Here's the scoop for other travelers looking to pick a hotel and I would definitely recommend one of the Catalina Hotels for others... The Catalina Hotel consist of 3 Hotels - Catalina, Dorset, and Maxine. The Dorset has the open bar and sushi restaurant and a swimming pool, bar, and cabanas on the roof top which are great attractions and benefits, but the loud music and noise takes away from an enjoyable vacation. If you love to party or are a young couple with no children wanting to have fun, the Dorset is the place for you! Many vacationers and models came from other hotels just to party and eat at the Dorset. The staff was very friendly and the room cleaning service was okay because they don't change your bed sheets at all, but the bed itself was very comfortable and relaxing. The bedroom lighting is somewhat dark but not a major issue. The room also included a mini snack bar which was expensive so your better off going to Walgreen's. Also, the interior/exterior designs including the front landscaping were picture perfect and the Dorset definitely stood out from the rest of the other expensive hotels on Collins Ave. In addition, the location of the hotel was perfect because it was less than a 5 minute walk to the beach and about a 10 minute walk to the Lincoln Mall and 5 minutes from Walgreens. Overall, we were satisfied with the Dorset but could do without all the noise and loud music. Please also note that the Catalina resort fee is actually $20.00 a day including taxes, not $15.00 as advertised.

The roos were bland. Hotel in general was not very clean. Staff was nice but not helpful. The room had no heat (cold when we were there). Rooms and hotel halls had poor lighting. Felt more like a dorm room than a hotel. Wakeup service called at 5 and 6:30 AM when none was requested (others said they had same problem). Red shag carpet was kind of scarey (dirty).

Location is great. That's it. Rooms are tiny and gross, no working internet. I would never stay again, the rooms were super dark. Food for breakfast was cold, and my eggs were clumped together. The hotel is a 1 star. The internet didn't work for the whole 3 days we were there.

Six of us stayed here for 3 nights in December '08 (3rooms - one in each building) and all of us agreed that it was a good place to stay. We had our breakfast on the sidewalk restaurant and the food and service were good. Our rooms were clean and the airconditioning was great - I kept my room at 65! Front desk staff was busy but very professional and helpful. It's a funky little place but that's what added to its appeal. Beds and pillows were very comfortable. I would love to go back to the Catalina.

This was our first time staying at the Catalina, we stood at the Dorset and I was kinda skeptical because some of the reviews that I read on here and on other sites were really putting it down. But I have to say that sometimes u can't go by reviews too much. Sometimes they exaggerate. I really enjoyed my stay there. The staff was very helpful and pleasant and the housekeeping was good too. She came everyday to check if we needed something. It's a decent sized room, yeah the room was a bit dim but it was cozy. The bed was comfortable and the sheets and towels were clean. The pool was nice and the concierge service was great and was very helpful. I would definitely go back again.

My husband & I stayed at this hotel over this Labor day weekend (Sep 2009)When we got here, we were told that our room was not ready and that we could get a Deluxe room for an extra $*(1 time fee for 3 nites). We agreed and were assigned a room in the North bldg(above Maxine rest.)The hallway was dingy & smelly (least to say) & so was the room. We went back & complained that this was not acceptable & we were given a corner room on the 2nd floor of the same bldg which happened to be a smoker's room.We felt that this was better than the previous room & opened up the windows to allow circulation of fresh-air.The bathroom is a story of it's own. It is 2*2 ft with an overhead shower. They have a strange arrangement for the shower screen. I initally thought it had sliding glass doors but soon realized that it just a single pane of glass which covers half of the portion allotted to the shower. When you shower the water pours out; i.e no shower curtain or sliding doors to contain the water. So by the time one person is done showering, the next person has to walk through the puddle of water on the floor to get to the shower. To me, this is totally unacceptable & unhygenic. For the money you pay, I guess the hotel should be able to invest in decent shower curtains atleast. Moreover, this has an overhead shower only and you are forced to wash your hair everyday whether you like it or not. Hotel is smelly & dirty. Lobby is not welcoming & staff are not courteous. Not worth the money you shell out. Will never return. Only perks are proximity to the beach & central location.

The hotel was very attractive and in great proximity to everything. The AC controls did not work after sundown. The shower needs a curtain or real door; floor kept getting wet. This was a great hotel! I literally parked my car 3 blocks away and did not have to move it for 3 days. There is so much within walking distance and cabs readily available for further activities. The decor and bathroom were really impressive with the "rain forest" shower head and multiple mirrors. The lobbies (inside and outside), staff, and general appeal of the hotel were excellent!

It was very unique, exemplified Miami's art deco district. The pool was great and the decor was interesting. Great free happy hour and great location. No towel bars or fans in bathroom, lighting was so dim, understandably artsy but very hard to see in the halls and rooms. Catalina hotel is very exemplary of an old art deco hotel in Miami. It has a Nuevo riche feeling to it, the staff are friendly. We had our family of 5 with us and it doesn't really cater to families but we enjoyed the location and especially our great dinner on the patio. It was a funky experience. Prepare for dim lighting and lots of red and white decor.

The pool area was great and the hotel was always being cleaned. The service at the restaurant was very poor. You had to keep reminding them of your order and asking where it was. The hotel was acceptable. It was clean and they had staff continually do this. They were friendly, but the service at the restaurant was awful. Slow and they appeared to lack staff.

Near the beach. Very poor service. As soon as we arrived and attempted to use the toilet after 12 hours on the road-no toilet paper. The second day, the room was not serviced until night fall--had to send my husband out to beg for towels for a shower after being on the beach all day. The third night, our air conditioner broke and we encountered a difficult time to obtain a new room once the technician could not fix it--the technician had to verify that the room was not habitable with an infant in tow. We were then given a room with a full size bed for the 3 of us to share. Overall, the experience was annoying and depressing. Thank God that Miami Beach is such a beautiful place! It helped to cheer us up.

This hotel has a personality, the red & white colors, urbanistic design, music create good vibe. There is a specific smell in the rooms (like bathroom). Very convenient location, cool pool on the roof-top for evenings, nice bar, very helpful and friendly personnel the shuttle is unreliable though so if your flight is before 10 cab it.
