General Description

Originally a private Georgian residence, The Swallow Chaucer Hotel in Canterbury, stands directly opposite Canterbury's ancient walls, a place regarded as the long-time spiritual center of England. Canterbury's Cathedral, the seat of the archbishop, is also within walking distance of the hotel. Dover Castle, known as the Key to England with its 2,000-year history, sits 13 miles away. Gatwick Airport is 72 miles from the hotel. The Hotel's main restaurant, 63 Ivy Lane, serves contemporary British cuisine with a French influence and features an extensive wine list. The less formal Pilgrim's Bar features a brassiere-style menu and summer seating on the terrace. Other amenities at The Swallow Chaucer Hotel include complimentary parking, dry cleaning services, limited room service and internet access. Each of the 42 traditional, brightly decorated guestrooms are named after a character from the works of Geoffrey Chaucer, the English poet regarded as the greatest literary figure of medieval England. All guestrooms include dark wood furnishings, cable televisions and direct-dial telephones. Dial-up Internet access is available upon request and subject to guestroom availability.

The hotel was quaint and friendly, but on a very warm day air conditioning would have been a welcome relef and stairs instead of an elevator made it more than a little difficult for a senior member of our group to get bags to and from his room.

We were disappointed in the hotel, given its 3 star rating. If you have large/heavy bags, be aware you'll have to carry them yourself up narrow stairways and halls.
The first room we were shown to was very small, with virtually no storage. The phone did not work. When I checked with staff about fixing it, I was told that they have problems in about half the rooms and little can be done unless they install a new system. Fortunately, this got us relocated to another room with a working phone, which also happened to be larger. In both rooms the furnishings were worn, the upholstery on the sofa in the second was noticeably torn. In both rooms and all passages above the ground floor, the floors creaked - everywhere and all the time! If you want atmosphere, this is for you; if you want to be able to take a step in your room without the rest of the hotel knowing - try somewhere else. If you are not carrying a computer, you'll need to go to the local library to get Internet access.

On the first day of arrival, the Hotel allocated the room on the 1/F with windows opening to the roof of the restaurant, as the windows did not have any window grilles, it would be very easy for someone to enter the room from the windows. I had requested the hotel to change to another room but in vein, then I requested an electric fan because I need to close the windows all the time, but the hotel also could not provide the fan. I strongly recommend the hotel to install window grille for the safety of guests.
