General Description

The Falstaff Hotel has been a focus for hospitality in Canterbury for over 600 years. A traditional 15th century coaching inn, the hotel is steeped in history. Over the years the hotel has been extended through conversions on an adjacent Wood Mill and a former pub, The Tap. Located just a few steps away from the Westgate Towers, the hotel is within easy walking distance of Canterbury City centre and all that it has to offer, including the world-famous Norman Cathedral, (designated a World Heritage site) castle, museums, shops and a choice of over 200 restaurants. There are forty-six ensuite bedrooms and a beamed lounge which offers guests a place to relax after a busy day's sightseeing. The bar opens out onto a pretty outdoor terrace where guests can enjoy a drink in the summer months. The hotel offers a cooked full English breakfast, but no lunch or dinner service, however, there are numerous excellent restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. There is a private car park within the grounds which accommodates 35 cars and is free for guests' use. Alternatively, there is a public car park on North Lane, opposite the hotel, charged at 90p per hour during the day (maximum 5 hours) or £1.50 overnight charge.

Ideal as had free parking at the rear although very tight, Rooms in need of a bit of refurb but comfy ideal for an over night stay. Can be very noisy if you are staying on the ground floor at the front as the window is right by the pavement, and floorboards very creaky upstairs. Also found walls really thin we could hear a clock ticking in the room next door even when we had the TV on. However ideal for our stay.

Hotel is a lovely old inn with a lot of character, however the rooms let it down badley, the bathroom was grimey and the linen on the bed had stains on it. I think the hotel is overpriced for what it is offering. However the location is good and the breakfasts were quite tasty.

The Hotel is basic but OK. The rooms have an authentic Olde worlde feel to them and the narrow corridors and lay out make you feel like you are in an old coaching inn. The room (well mine at least) was spacious and comfortable and the location is great. On the down side the customer service is not great. The reception is not always attended and it seems they job share on reception duties and bar staff. It was a pity that they ran out of breakfast too - a clumsy mistake that leaves a bad impression. Would I stay there again? Probably - but I’m not it a hurry to go back.

We went for a 30th wedding annaversary treat. We had a few problems with the room, like a blocked sink and faulty controls on the shower, mening we could not use it. These were reported to the hotel, but no action was taken. i asked for a change of room, but was told they were fully booked. Other small problems with staff attitude were also apparant. All in all not the best weekend. On checkout we were promised a call from the General manager and to date this has not happened.

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. First of all, I was \"greeted\" by the front desk girl by waiting for her to finish her personal conversation on the telephone. Second of all, she was not helpful at all with the city or giving me any sort of direction to the city. Third, the room was terrible. I walked into my room and while it was big for a European hotel, it smelled horrible. It smelled like sweat and unwashed sheets and towels. The bathroom was filthy and the shower head was falling off the wall. I really wanted to book another hotel, but it was really late in the day. The hotel was terrible and I was paying 80 pounds for a dirty room. I think I could've probably found a better hotel elsewhere in Canterbury.
