A very pleasant stay with helpful staff. The hotel is a short but steep walk up from the station and the town centre.

On site parking a boon in Durham. Room adequate. Breakfast SUPERB didn't try the restaurant for an evening meal but it looked \"cutting edge\" and pricey

This is a very ordinary B&B - linen and towels are old and fraying, the room was not very clean and the bathroom was not clean at all. A very disappointing stay

Very friendly staff. The restaurant is fantastic and much better quality than you would normally expect from such a hotel. I would go to the restaurant even if I wasn't staying at the hotel

It was very disappointing to arrive at 2015 to find that the hotel kitchen was closed and no food was available, although the recommended italian restaurant located just up the road was perfectly adequate.Unfortunately the curtain in my room detached itself from the curtain rail and I was informed that yes it had been like that earlier in the day and the rail needed fixing. Reluctantly the staff effected a temporary repair whilst I was out having dinner.I would not stay here again and would not recommend it as I think it was poor value - I have stayed at much nicer hotels for a significantly lower rate.

Pleasantly surprised by how quiet our room was. This property is ideal to visit Durham Cathedral and city centre: about a 20 minutes walk. The train station was a 5 minute cab ride away. A nice surprise was a 10 minute walk away - Michaelangelo's Italian restaurant which served up plenty of real Italian foods, wines and great service.

This is a very quaint hotel unique and reminded me a little of faulty towers. certainly worth staying if you are looking for an independant hotel that is a bit different from the big chains.

Pleasant 1 night stay. Clean bathroom, although room and rest of hotel is average - did expect slightly higher standard in a lovely house. Staff were courteous and helpful at all times. Allowed us to park for afternoon after checking out same morning.Booked to eat at Gastronomy Restaurant 'G SPOT'! same evening on arrival- Interesting, artistic experience, not cheap but we would definately sample again. The two waitresses were helpful and very eager to please. Many Thanks

Farnley Tower HotelWe stayed in the family room at this hotel. It is located in a very pleasant road, near enough to the city centre to walk. The staff were very friendly and the food (we only had breakfast) was good. Our room was a little tired, it could do with new mattresses, pillows and linens. The bathroom also could do with an upgrade. That said, we enjoyed our stay, and due to its location I would recommend this hotel to others.

Friendly service and good location - excellent breakfastMet with a smile, shown to the room, offered a local map or other help if required. Restaurant staff all very friendly - very good quality breakfast and plenty of it. Adequate parking and only a few minutes walk to centre of Durham - good attitude in that you can leave your car there on the day you leave. Quiet location for a good night's sleep even though it's central.Only minor criticism - the room window was overlooked by neighbouring properties and no blinds so it was a choice of be on view or close the curtains, and the room lighting was not bright. (Being overlooked wouldn't apply to every room.)

Staff were all very friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable and I would definitely stay at Farnley Tower again. We ate in the restaurant and invited family members to join us. Although slightly pricey, the food was excellent and quite imaginative.

The room was large and spotlessly clean with a nice bathroom. The food in the restaurant was unusal and I am not sure how good the service would have been if it was busy. There were only 4 tables full in the restaurant and I had to wait 1 hour to be seated. The breakfast was advertised as freshly cooked on the menu but was not very well presented or cooked when it can I was unimpressed by the quality of the food.

The room we booked and paid for was supposed to be superior when in fact it was less then standard. There was a half used hotel shampoo bottle and one small bar of soat left in the bathroom. The handtowels we left out to be replaced were not, and the bed was not properly remade with the sheet and blanket left dangling on the floor one side and not covering the bed on the other. We were told there was no hall or outside light the first night so had to find our way in total darkness when we returned. The following day the \"manager\" told us there were lights and the other person should have known. We found it very difficult to get anyone at reception as no one responded to the bell. On leaving we said we were unhappy and were asked if we wanted a complaints form. We said yes but the forms could not be found. i will be informing the Tourist Board.

Very happy with the Hotel. Friendly helpful staff, excellent choice of breakfast , room fine. The breakfast room is lovely if a wee bit bright. I do wonder whether the brightness might have been a reason for me developing a migraine soon after eating breakfast there. Only one comment... Trust it to be situated at the top of a very steep hill! I nearly had to be rescusitated after making my way up from Crossgates!

I had to wait along time at the reception desk whilst two staff (possibly from the restaurant) appeared to discusss their general disgruntlement. Eventually someone appeared from upstairs. The chaotic scenes at breakfast were reminiscent of the famous hotel with the simmilar name!Otherwise the location of the hotel is good and parking in Durham is a great advantage.

We were very pleased with the hotel. A really attractive building inside and out. The room was large and well furnished. The bathroom was huge and very well fitted. Views over Durham were impressive and it was only a 10 minute walk to the centre. The return walk is up a very steep hill which we didn't mind but it would be a problem for anyone who was infirm. The breakfast was very good and the service excellent. I would certainly stop there again and would recommend it highly to freinds and family.

Fairly nice in a very dated wayThis hotel is well situated for those who don't mind a bit of a walk, it is about a mile and 300 feet of climb from the city centre. I was amazed at how friendly and helpful the staff were, but the rest of the experience was not so good, so overall i didn't think it very good value. The bedroom was small and clean but rather basic, with no bath, only a rather difficult to work and disappointing shower. The bathroom was so small that it was hard to manouver in there ( and I'm not overweight!) The bed had an old fashioned cover and sheets/blankets. The room was cramped even by London standards and very basic, with an ancient 12 inch TV, basic tea facilities, a small wardrobe, a small desk, and nothing else. The Hotel was probably so expensive as it was graduation week in Durham and accomodation difficult to find. Even so, this room was very pricey. The cooked breakfast was fairly good but only a very basic selection of cereals and cheap preserves. Overall, not too bad but far too expensive for the overall experience. Also be warned, there don't seem to be many taxis in durham so plan on walking everywhere and be warned that the Hotel is much higher up than the bridges into the town centre!

If only the rest of the hotel could be of the same standard as the was old fashioned and dingy, although large enough, but bed linen was too small for the bed and well passed its sell-by date. Shower and bath were average.

The silcon around the bath is mouldy/broken and needs attention, the window frame is black and mouldy, (Rm8), the young man on reception was like a sulking teenager, when we arrived with a guide dog and explained there was no way of saying we had a guide dog to pre warn the hotel, he still gave us a room on the second floor, past 3 doors.... no sorry but we dont have any rooms on the ground floor!!The restauraunt is way too expensive at £55 per head... you have no michelin stars, you are not in central london...we are supposed to be in a recession!! Lower your restaurant prices then we will dine here, their is a lot of competition for the food revenue...

Agree wholeheartedly with the other comments. Great B&B, slightly pricey, but one of the best I've stayed in. Fantastic view across town, great and very large superior room, awesome shower. Excellent breakfast (especially the kippers), great customer service. It was a fair walk up the hill, and we didn't find anything to eat close by, but town only a 10 minute walk away. Certainly recommended if you can afford it.

shame about the breakfastgenerally speaking an adequate, fair value hotel with little that was outstanding and equally little that was poor. Staff generally were polite and considerate though not always in evidence. Promised views of the town were unavailable due to the mist. Major disappointment was the english breakfast which showed real promise but was let down badly by poor attention to detail - the mushrooms were soggy and tasteless and white toast was unavailable an hour before the end of the sitting.

The beds were extremely hard. The staff were lovely and helpful when asked for things, but not very helpful with things like offering to load cases when leaving etc. There were a group of them sitting in the hall and watching my mother struggle with heavy bags! The other complaint - not really a complaint, Durham is very hilly and so the owners decided to open a restaurant in the hotel so that people wouldn't have to walk up and down into Durham. In my opinion, the restaurant was aiming too high. Good plain food and much cheaper prices would have been much better. Not everybody wishes to eat and eat all the time! We ended up in Pizza Express in the centre of Durham (much better value).
