Large comfortable, old fashioned room. Good view over garden. Bathroom a bit worn out but OK. Off the beaten track. The Tavern next door would have been better without the widescreen football.

Very friendly welcome upon arrival and plenty of parking spaces outside. The room was a little worn but otherwise very clean and a good size. Free WiFi is a bonus for business travellers. Breakfast absolutley wonderful and perfect start to the day.

Temperature control of shower very poor, fluctuating between very hot to very cold. Wardrobe old with door that was very hard to close, it kept opening which cut off movement around bed. I am unsure of the level of security in car park, there did not appear to be CCTV camera around area I had to park in.

Well appointed hotel. Very good food in the restaurant and good quality breakfast. Only downside only a bath no shower which was a shame.

We didn't get the twin we booked (it's on reg form) but a double. and with no expalanation/apology. The room was OK but the bathroom wastebin hadn't been emptied and there were cobwebs in every corner! The glass bedside table hadn't ben cleaned, had blobs of food or something on it. (subsequently removed/cleaned by me)However, the service was very friendly esp at breakfast. Food was very good. Would go again.

The Hotel, in places, was beginning to show that it was in need of refurbishment. Wardrobe door didn't close, chips on the varnish and particularly disappointing a shower without very hot water A limited lunch menu was only available, so I chose to eat elsewhere. The Breakfast was good and the staff excellent. Good value through using Late Rooms, but wouldn't pay the normal price.

A good country house style hotel in a rather remote location - sat nav helped find it. Decor a bit tired and dated, room door lock needed three keys to get it to work and bedside lamps did not work. Apart from reception all other staff very friendly and helpful. Food good and well presented. I would stay here again.

Only derogatory comment is that the entrance hall/reception gives a bad impression - it is dark, gloomy, and in dire need of renovation.

Very Happy CustomerAccommodation was very good. Yes, the hotel is worn, as others have said, but so are most of our own homes! Service was good, room was clean, and there was every thing in the room that I needed. Food very good !!

Evening meal vegetables were not cooked enough. Was asked 3 times for desert choice, indicates lack of coordination. Newspaper ordered never turned up. First room was badly laid out, light did not work nor did hall light outside room. Hotel forgot to charge for dinner I found out 3 days later. Repetitive car horn noise late at night even though mentioned to reception reaction by staff was very slow to sort out. Was I unlucky? Don't know. Would I return there? Dubious. Just too many errors. Nice setting and location though.

The hotel (once a grand mansion) needs a little TLC. Our stay (for one night) was excellent the staff were excellent and the food (breakfast in particular) was excellent.

I found this one a bit hard to find, and got lost on the way, could do with some more signs. However, when I arrived I found the staff to be very friendly and the food was excellent and obviously not a pre frozen ready meal as most hotels seem to serve. The hotel was quirky and my room had lots of character - its a very grand building.

We stayed for 1 night and the room was great, everything we needed, receptionist was very helpful, trying to sort taxi's out for us. We only had breakfast (not an evening meal) which was lovely, friendly staff and lots on offer. The hotel is a lovely old building and has character.

Easy to get too. Used it for an overnight stay en route up North. What a disappointment. Is this the best Late Rooms can offer. Room was grubby, hadnt seen a vacuum cleaner in months. Sink was cracked. Whole place is in need of a refurm. Can sum it up in three words. WHAT A DUMP!

RecommendationI would recommend this hotel to anyone - The room & ensuite were extremely clean. My husband has slight mobility problems & as a result he had slight problems getting into the bath to have a shower due in part to there not being a grab rail on the wall. Apart from this slight problem the staff were excellent, when I asked where the nearest supermarket was I was given a handwritten map from a member of staff, & we found the supermarket ok. The staff are very curteous & friendly. We did not have any complaints about this hotel.

Better than many reviews suggested! The carpet is somewhat worn in the public areas, it's true. And the building is old, with the associated slight contour shifts in floors. But the room was lovely, the facilities all clean and the ambience great. And to those who have said the showers have no hot water... switch on the hot water first! It's an old hotel, and some of the bathrooms have separate switches for the hot water. No problems whatsoever, in our room anyway!

the hotel is very welcoming though initially it comes over as somewhat shabby-gentile. The facilities are good as are the breakfasts - generally it is very good value for money (this is the second time we have stayed).

Extremely Good Value HotelThe hotel is a little bit tired, but apart from that it was ideal for us. It was a lot cheaper than hotels in Durham itself so was great for a stop-over. You do need a car if you are staying here really, but it only took 10 minutes to the centre of Durham. Nice quiet surroundings as it is situated in the country. It was a bit noisy at one time in the night due to other guests making a racket when they got home, but you can't blame the hotel for that and it only lasted for a few minutes - as against most of the night when we stayed in a more expensive hotel in the heart of Durham! The room was fine, if a little basic, but was warm and comfortable. I thought the bed was good but my wife complained that it was too firm - so I guess that would be a matter of personal preferences. We didn't eat at the hotel during the evening but we both had a full English breakfast that was extremely good - freshly cooked. Plenty of cereals, and fruit juices followed by bacon, sausages, mushrooms, tomatoes, etc...Staff were very efficient and friendly. I liked the place and would defintely stay again.

Weekend Break We booked this hotel on late rooms website, having used their website before. The saving on the normal price was good and we enjoyed a 2 night stay in a comfortable quaint place. The furniture in the room was in keeping with the traditional 'old world' style. Separate en-suite in our bedroom on the first floor was clean and had mains shower with very hot water at the basin taps. Drinks tray and bottle of water was a nice touch. Friendly staff throughout made us feel welcome, more personal than any larger hotel. Freshly cooked breakfast rather than buffet style. Ideal location base in the country off the A1(M) but just 3 miles from Durham. We did not eat in the hotel in the evening as we were out to see the East Coast and Beamish Open Air Museum over the 3 day period. Free car parking at the front of the hotel with lighting overnight. If we had a query, directions or just information, reception staff were very helpful. The hotel gave us a discount voucher for Beamish - Remember to ask if it is still available.

I really liked this hotel, and at LateRooms rates it represented excellent value for money. I only had breakfast, but this was good quality and seemed to be cooked to order as it was hot and fresh.

Think faded Edwardian country house. Excellent place to stay the night, but no lift and the stair carpet is a bit worn. My room was on the second floor in an attic room with a dormer window. Fine for one it would have been a squeeze for two but sufficient. Bed was comfortable. Furniture has character, but everything you need is there from WiFi to hairdryer, kettle, tea and coffee etc. Shower wc and sink all clean and functioning.Excellent cooked breakfast, and staff were very friendly.Laterooms Rate was very good value.

The only negative observation I have is that some if the corridor carpets need to be replaced rather than taped up it does look bad, but does not effect the cleanliness of the hotel. The staff were very helpful and friendly, and the food was exceptionally good, nothing Gordon Ramsey could criticise, and at a very very reasonable price.

Pleasant, old Manor type hotel. Service was ok, meals were average, room was ok,creakyand slightly uneven floor! Would have preferred bath to shower and shower was a littledangerous...quite slippy? Perhaps a map sent from the hotel, prior to stay, would have beenuseful (difficult to find without Sat.Nav?). Otherwise good value.
