A former Carmelite convent built three and a half centuries ago, El Convento has gone through many incarnations before a complete refurnishment carefully restored this historic hotel with special attention paid to the preservation of the original structure. Stroll through a lushly landscaped interior courtyard bathed in the soothing glow of wrought-iron lamps. All the guestrooms at El Convento reveal their distinctive character and convey the spirit of the Old World with handcrafted furniture, mahogany beams, Andalusian tiles, elegant marble bathrooms, and vistas of Old San Juan and its bay. Deluxe rooms have Spanish louver doors that open to a veranda partially overlooking historic Old San Juan. The hotel has a garden terrace bar with a panoramic view of the city, and a Spanish restaurant situated on the third floor where breakfast is served. The lobby is small in size with black and white marble flooring. The check in is on the third floor. 12 kms to the nearest airport (luis munoz marin intl).

This was not what I was expecting for the price paid. rooms are small and some on lower level are dark. I adjusted and enjoyed my stay, but it was a definite surprise.

The hotel staff were very courteous and attentive. The breakfast in Patio Nispero was excellent. It is a charming, historical hotel and it is well located for sightseeing in San Juan.

Really neat place to stay. The staff was so friendly and helpful. I highly recommend using the staff to arrange tours, it was user friendly and reasonably priced. It's also a great place to honeymoon. It is very romantic and close to the Paseo Princesa which is a romantic beachfront walkway. The nearby shops are also awesome! It is close to all sorts of eating options from low-cost to high quality. I am so glad that we stayed there.

This hotel is certainly a gem. The room decor is authentic Puerto Rico with a small terrace. The staff is friendly and was very helpful in recommending restaurants with good food and low price points. The hotel has a nice fitness center and library with a computer. Bottled water, coffee and various beverages are available free of charge 24/7. I can?t say enough about the hotel's location in the heart of old San Juan. We were within walking distance to all of the shops, restaurants and historical sites in the area. It was great to be able to walk around the city and return to our hotel for a brief rest before venturing out again - without any time constraints associated with a guided tour.

This hotel was amazing!!! The first room they gave us we weren't quite satisfied with so they immediately moved us to a different one. The rooms are gorgeous with extremely high ceilings in some. The staff are really, really friendly. Where you are staying is absolutely beautiful authentic Puerto Rican style. I have no complaints about the hotel. The only thing is yoru about 15 min. from the beach, so you would have to take a cab or rent a car. We rented from Charlie cars for $21 for a day. We then went to see Biscayne Bay which was cool,but not so cool if you are afraid of kayaking in the dark!IF you do that, def. do the kayak, you can't see the water from the boat trips. I would definitely stay at Hotel El Convento again. It was beautiful.

Our travel agent recommended this place as a slightly expensive but romantic place to stay before our cruise. We found a great price around $ for one night and the whole hotel was wonderful ;they even upgraded us to the honeymoon suite without us asking;. Unlike some other hotels, it doesn't earn its high star ratings from the fancy new amenities. Rather, the service, history, antiques, and overall romantic setting make this a great hotel. With an evening wine and cheese reception overlooking the nearby church and park area, this place has a romantic and special feel that my wife and I will not soon forget.

El Convento is excellent. The property is beautiful and within walking distance to everything in Old San Juan. The staff was helpful and friendly. Every restaurant they recommended was amazing. If I ever return to San Juan, I definitely plan to stay at El Convento.

Hotel El Convento is in the Old San Juan area -excellent location - the hotel is very unique with paintings and nice furnishings, lots of character - so beautiful. I was only there for one short night. I chose it to stay in the Old San Juan area - probably the best hotel choice for that. The room was very clean, large screen TV (but with everything so close, didn't watch it), there was a dip pool (very small, but nice to cool down), a nice courtyard area in the center for breakfast, the staff was very friendly and scheduled our airport taxi right on time.
