General Description

This two star, family owned city centre hotel comprises a collection of six listed buildings around a courtyard setting. The oldest building (pictured) dates from 1659. Situated on Skeldergate, the ancient Roman waterfront that now leads from the city walls across the river to the historic city. The convenient location, combined with the hotels scenic setting is ideal for exploring York and the surrounding area. The railway station and all major attractions are within easy walking distance. The University and other business areas are also easily accessible from the hotel. A full range of facilities include guest parking, a restaurant serving English cooking, a bar and lounge area and a health and fitness centre with counter current fitness pool (booking required), sauna and CV equipment (children are welcome to use the fitness centre, though there are some restrictions for those under 18). Guest accommodation is located within five of the buildings, which have been restored to provide 54 en suite bedrooms, with tranquil seating areas around the garden ponds and in the English gardens. Due to the age of the buildings, the hotel does not have a lift, however some ground floor rooms are available. Please request at the time of booking. Some of our rooms are large enough to accommodate extra beds or cots for children (at an additional cost), please contact the hotel directly to discuss your requirements. The hotel is an entirely non-smoking venue. Free WiFi Internet access in 'The Meetings Place' conference centre and in one public lounge area. No hidden extras. All rates include: VAT @ 17.5%, your en-suite room, full English breakfast, car parking and the use of the Emperors Gym. Children are welcome in our Fitness centre, though there are some restrictions for those under 18. Our reception staff are happy to discuss any specific requests you may require, including special occasion flowers, champagne etc. Dinner is available each night; special diets can be catered for with sufficient prior notice.

Room I was allocated had all amenities but was a bit dated.All public areas were very nice and modern.Breakfast excellent.Very good gym.

The room was awful, if you have to look out on an ashfelt roof and brick wall then they could have picked up the broken TV aerial. We asked to be moved but were told all rooms were the same!!!! The shower room left a lot to be desired. On a possitive note,the breakfast was acceptable and the dining room staff attentive

Room in need of refurbishing. Bathroom looked as if it had been done more recently. Water in hand basin took a long time to drain away. A twin room, not very spacious. Two wardrobes. The one that was easy to access had no hangers. The one that was difficult to access , chair in front of it and then fixed hangers one behind the other, very difficult to hang anything. Breakfast staff very efficient. The Sunday breakfast was excellent, Mondays not so good. Location good for York. Easy parking.

The hotel is ideally situated within easy walking distance of York city centre and the staff who dealt with us could not have been more helpful. Nothing was too much trouble for them. We would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone who is considering a trip to York!

A very pleasant surprise. For the price I expected a much more basic hotel. Very nice nature of hotel, a change from the usual. Great location, easy walk from station and all main sights. Superb all you can eat breakfast/buffet. Staff very friendly. Gym is superb, a full fitness centre. Only negative comment is could do with a lick of paint here and there but dont be put off by that. Would definitely recommend and stay here again.

Hotel is ideally positioned close to the centre of York and easy to access by car. Arrived at 1100 and we were allowed to leave the car in the car park before check-in time of 1400 and could have left it there until 1400 the next day. Staff were extremely courteous and helpfull throughout- a particularly nice touch was that we were escorted to our room which overlooked the pleasant courtyard. The large en-suite room was clean, well stocked with tea/coffee/biscuits etc, the bed was very comfortable and you get free membership of the on-site gymnasium. The hotel has a pleasant, family-run atmosphere (thankfully it does not accept hen or stag party bookings) and being on a relatively quiet street does not appear to suffer from excess traffic or 'revellers' noise at night. All in all a very pleasant stay in a hotel that met all of our needs and expectations and excellent value for a total of £58 for B&B for 2 people.

Excellent location, helpful and friendly staff, interesting layout in nice surroundings.. but the room was tiny, dark and as I result I wouldn't recommend this hotel.

The room was clean, modern and spacious but had a tiny window and skylight. The reception staff seemed off-hand. I thought it was overpriced for the room and facilities - I stayed in central London for £4 a night less just a few days before.

Good value but scruffy roomThe hotel is very near to the centre of York, easily within walking distance. The car park was quite small but we managed to find a space and it was a bonus to have free parking. Our room, no. 52, was large and had a double and a single bed, bedside cabinets, two chairs, small tv, books, desk with chair and tea/coffe making facilities. The furniture was very scruffy and bashed but clean. There was a lovely fireplace and huge mirror above it. The bathroom was a mustard colour, looked dated but the shower worked well, there was always hot water and it was very clean. This room overlooks the road and there was a little traffic noise. It is very secure and can only be accessed via a key pad. The worst thing about this room is you can hear people in the room above walking around and using the bathroom, the floor boards are very creaky. This resulted in two nights of very little sleep for us as the people upstairs seemed to use the toliet a lot during the night!Breakfast in the hotel was very good and the restaurant looks very clean, new and fresh. The waitresses are very pleasant and polite, particularly Ann Marie.Some of the staff at reception could do with a few lessons in good customer service. The lady that checked us in was efficient and polite but upon check out the young man on reception took the key, said ' all paid for' and that was it, not even a thank you or good bye. I think there is no excuse when working on a hotel reception for common courtesy. There was no queue when checking in or out.Good value if you can get a cheap deal, if not look elsewhere.

From the moment we arrived ,we were made to feel very welcome. We ate at the the hotel on the Saturday. The food was of a high quality .The meal deal was excellent value. The staff work very hard are well presented. Breakfast was outstanding . There was lots of variety and choice.Our only regret was that we never got chance to use the pool or the gym as we run out of time it looked fab. We enjoyed our whole weekend in york and the Lady Ann Middelton Hotel was the iceing on the cake . Thank you we will be back.

Good LocationWe all as a fanily enjoyed our stay at the hotel.It was very central.The staff were very friendly and helpful.The fact that the hotel had retained its period features and the history behind the hotel added to its appeal as did the the price,Very good value for money.The only negative comment iwould make would be ,maybe a revamp of the bathrooms would add more stars to this hotel.

Would not stay againWe stayed here for one night and that was enough. The room was very plain and the bath very small. Customer service was bad and not very friendly. The breakfast staff and food needed a lot of help to be good. When I called the front desk to see if there was a fan I could use, because it was very hot in our room, they said no. The only part that was nice, was that a friendly staff member brought me up a fan.
