Well priced hotel in the centre of town with its own free car park. Good restuarant with reasonably priced food looking out onto the street outside.

Room a little 1991 for me, which was poignant, given I was meeting an old uni mate that night but overall the hotel is tired, jaded and though not dirty - poorly cleaned - it just doesn't have the fresh feeling you hope for when you open the door to the room. No wifi either, which is never popular.

Pretty much what was expected from an old coach inn. On the whole it was what we were looking for, somewhere to rest after playing disc golf. Wouldn't go for a romantic break with the Fiance, but would go back for another disc golf event. Breakfast was good and lots of it.

Water pressure can't be too high judging by the trickle that comes out of the shower. Fine hotel slightly past its best but smack in the middle of town, perfect for those drunk walks home. In the winter this place would be great with it's roaring fires.

We loved this hotel. On a main road, bang in the middle of town, with it's own parking. Position can't be beaten. Lovely old hotel, not a sterile box! All staff were excellent, very attentive and good humoured. With all these advantages come some compromises. If you get a room at the front of the hotel, it will be noisey. The room we had was a strange shape, with really creaky floor boards. (to us, part of the 'old hotel' experience!) The bed had a really saggy mattress/bed, which we mentioned on the in hotel review, shrugging it off with a giggle, but actually caused my wife some severe backache later in the week. She couldn't walk around for a day or so. So, yes we'd be there again, but prepared to insist on a better bed if we were given another of this standard.

We stopped using this hotel over 12 months ago due to the drab environment and staff attitude. What a change, the hotel is now under a private owner and the influence has been a breath of fresh air. Reception from the time of booking in to leaving could not have been more helpful. The room had been refurbished to a high standard and was spotless. The breakfast was of a very high standard and again the staff excellent. New life has been pumped into this historic building.

This hotel was one of the most pleasant hotels that I have used and even though some road noise penetrated our room, we were extremely comfortable. We found the staff very friendly and helpful , the food was excellent and very reasonable given the high quality. I would heartily reccomend this hotel to others and look forward to my next visit.

When I booked ,I explained my guest has walking difficulties and was assured that was \"no problem\" on arrival there was a sign at the car park entrance diverting me around back lanes. We eventually arrived at an old car park in a part of the hotel I have never seen. There were no signs to entrance of the hotel and unless one went on a long walk through back lanes no way into the hotel. We eventually arrived at the reception desk and asked why the detour and was told car park is full . When I explained my guest is disabled and you knew we would be arrived after 7 p.m. the receptionist smiled and and said sorry. The room allocated was on 3rd. floor , Knowing you have a guest with limited walking ability I question the logic of allocating a room on top floor, I know there is a lift but it must not be used in an emergency!!!.The food is not what it was and there is a lack of enthusiasm in the staff

It is an historic hotel right in the centre of Shrewsbury, and easy to get to by following the town centre signs from the A5. I liked the generous amount of free car parking. The kitchen will provide food in the bar/lounges pretty well all day long. The lounges are particularly comfortable. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Excellent breakfast with prompt service. The room was a little ordinary; a twin room offered at the rear (we booked a twin and were put into a double), was very dull, so we chose to stay put, and the staff showed no sign of impatience at our change of mind. Perhaps paying Late Rooms rates did not gain us access to the better rooms? All in all we enjoyed our stay and we intend to go back again at the end of the month.Ron Self

Nice central location and free parking was a bonus. The Hotel has not altered in 20 years and still has the charm of an old coaching hotel although the decor and ambience reflect this. It was a good thing |I was not very tall as the single bed had a metal bed head and bottom end on it!! The bathroom needed updating and refurbishing and the water took an age to go down the plughole. I received a friendly and efficient welcome at reception. The breakfast and the service at breakfast were excellent.

Although we didnt eat our evening meals in the restaurant the menu was vaired and reasonably priced. We ate in the bar from the bar meal menu. The food was excellent and very good value for money. The atmosphere in the bar was chearful and friendly with the open fires giving welcome warmth from the cold outside. The staff were welcoming and I could not fault the welcome and hospitality. The room was very spacious and clean. The hotel is excellently positioned for the town centre shopping, bars, resaurants and lovely for walks down the river. I would recommend you try the local cinema in the Market Square - an experience.

FeedbackA lovely old hotel but a little jaded once you get out of the Reception/bar area. Something had been taken off the wall of our room and just the holes and outline of where had been left. Could do with a lick of paint. Customer service not bad but could be improved. For example, we were having slight difficulty getting through a door with our luggage and a member of staff stood by to let us through, but didn't offer to hold the door open to make it easier. We'd stayed at the Feathers in Ludlow the night before, where customer service was second to none. However, it is a nice place to stay, and perfectly located, and we would go back.

The location of the Hotel was excellent for shopping & retaurants which was the main purpose of our trip.I had read previous reports on the hotel which had complained about the noise issues of rooms at the front of the Hotel.Upon booking, I telephoned the Hotel direct and requested a room at the rear of the Hotel and this was confirmed. On arrival, due to availability, we were given a room on the front and subsequently had the worst nights sleep. I strongly recommend the Hotel owners invest in some form of secondary glazing on the windows as I think this is really letting the Hotel down.

Good Budget HotelThe website for this hotel is wonderful, if only the hotel could compare to it! The staff were very friendly and checking in was very easy and straightforward. However the hotel lift is probably the same one Noah used on the Arc (we got stuck in it 3 times or sometimes after the doors closed it just refused to move!). The rooms were clean, but after checking out the hotel website we were looking forward to a slice of luxury and unfortunately we were disappointed. The room was basic and in need of updating. Again the bathroom was clean if you didn't mind the odd stray hair in the sink and in need of updating. The common areas looked tired and the carpets were threadbare in some places. Not somewhere I would go for a romantic weekend away.

The hotel has a lot of character and I would imagine that they are restricted on making some improvements due to the age of the building, however the bathroom facilities could do with an overhaul, the shower was absolutley terrible.

Very nice, clean hotel with excellent service. The bar and restaurant menu catered for all tastes and the food was of a very high standard (try the rib-eye steak!). The room I was allocated was slightly quirky and not quite sure about the red velvet swing! I would prefer to have stayed in the summer when I could have enjoyed the garden.

The hotel was easy to find with a good sized undercover car park with security cameras. Staff were exceedingly helpful and efficient. In the evening I ordered a bar meal which was excellent value for money- a large portion of scampi and french fries which was piping hot and very enjoyable served in a comfortable lounge area in front of a cosy fire. My bedroom was well equipped with a decent sitting area and windows that opened/. My only complaint is that the WC was the opposite of the room from the bathroom and without a wash baisin. The hotel is full of character and an ideal place to stay for a festive break.

Good location. Room good size for a single but noise from the nearby lift was more than excessive! Decent hotel bar with very good bar meals. Biggest criticism was the fact that I couldn't check out at 06:40 as the night porter wasn't trained in checking out??!! Overall decent and good value.

Characterful hotel - in the public spaces. Plenty of cosy places to sit with a drink. Very good breakfast. Room, however, was 'tired'. Maybe last done out in 1980s. Mould round the bathroom window. Mis-matching wall tiles with discoloured grout. Could hear every footstep in room above me, and everyone in the corridor outside. Very creaky floors which one might put down to age of the building .. but more likely just poorly fixed boards under the carpets. The room was next to the lift which was very noisy. The room info said the lift is turned off at 11.45pm because of the noise, but it was still running well in to the small hours. All-in all not a bad experience but for £75 a night for a single I would really expect better.

the hotel is very old and rustic, big old fireplaces and comfy chairs. the staff are very professional, and helpful and jovial. The food was great and the drinks too! i'd recommend it for a weekend in shrewsbury. only downside was when there was a function on in the ballroom and the music was a bit loud but the staff were helpful.

An excellent place for a romantic weekend. The Lion epitomises the word 'quirky'. The hotel is a warren of corridors and rooms stretching back from the frontage. Dating from the 16th century the proprietors have updated just enough to provide modern facilities yet keep the intimacy and warmth of the original building. Service was excellent - it was apparent that everyone enjoyed workng there, and that underscored the feeling of relaxation and calm. I can't wait for my next stay.
