Just returned from a week in Shanghai where I stayed at the China Mansion Hotel. I was taking my daughter to her study abroad program and really wanted to stay somewhere luxurious and memorable. The Mansion delivers on both counts. Located in the former French concession the hotel is a private home that has been lovingly converted to a lavish 33 room hotel - one of the nicest I've ever been to (and I've been lucky enough to have stayed in some of the very best). My room was enormous, with high ceilings, a private terrace and a beautifully appointed bathroom with a tub that was practically big enough to do laps in. Despite the language barrier (The Mansion is not the Marriott in this regard) the level of service was superb. Prompt room service, a fantastic rooftop restaurant for drinks and/or dinner, and an attentive staff that anticipated my every need. I also loved the location which was both convenient and enough out of the main tourist crush to make you feel as though China is really just outside your door. A great value for the money.....
