General Description

Middlethorpe Hall is a William and Mary country house, built in 1699 of mellow red brick with limestone dressings, for Thomas Barlow, a master cutler from Sheffield. It was bought in the 1980s and reopened as a luxury Hotel, Restaurant and Spa in 1984, rescued from decay, caringly and lovingly restored by Historic House Hotels. In September 2008, Middle Thorpe Hall and the other two Historic House Hotels became the inalienable property of the National Trust by donation, with all profits benefiting the houses and the charity. There are ten elegant guestrooms and suites to be found in the main Hall, with further delightful guestrooms in the restored 18th Century Courtyard and cottage. Guestrooms are all en suite and furnished in a country house style, with antiques and fine prints. Middle Thorpe Spa is housed in a Grade II listed cottage, which has been carefully restored and modified to house a large indoor swimming pool, spa bath, steam room and sauna, gymnasium and three beauty treatment rooms. Middle Thorpe Hall is well known for its comfortable, luxurious atmosphere, as well as its beautifully restored walled gardens with 18th Century Dovecote, lavender walk, rolling lawns with ha-ha and parkland landscape.

Problems for the Business TravellerA beautifully kept building with lovely gardens but far from ideal for the business traveller. Rooms were ornate but cluttered and lacked practicallity (limited power sockets and very small desk space). The lack of a kettle in the room was somewhat bizarre - I wasn't going to order room service tea at five in the morning. The food was excellent but pricey. Ideal for a special meal out but not really what you want when you are trying to unwind at the end of a busy day and the unoffical dress code for dinner was quaint but mildly irritating. Staff were attentive but at times overly so - bit claustrophobic. An excellenet hotel for a weekend retreat or pampering but I wouldn't use it again for business.

A fantastic hotel, out of town but oh so good, down to latest DVD releases available to watch in your room.

The food and service are excellent, however the courtyard rooms are below whay you would expect of a \"superior\" room and a hotel at this price. Unfortunately during our stay the swimming pool was cold also as a result of the boiler apparantly not working properly.All in all fantastic food and service let down by the rooms and maintenance.

Almost everything was perfect. Guests are waited on by efficient, friendly staff who respond willingly to requests. I was able to have a cooked breakfast the second morning because the hotel sourced some veggie sausages at my request. It arrived hot and freshly cooked, not having sat on a hot plate for half an hour. I was a little disappointed to be charged £23 for the two continental breakfasts we had on our first morning. (I queried it; breakfasts are apparently more expensive if you book the room-only rate offered by this site). The gym has five pieces of equipment placed close together. OK if you are a friendly type. We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay here. This is a hotel where guests are very well looked after. Recommended.

A good hotel, particularly if you can get a deal like we did. Good service and facilities are a bonus - although I wouldn't stay here just to use the spa, as it is quite basic. Easy to get into the town centre. Was very impressed by the staff and their service.

Only had bed and breakfast but excellent room, service and food quality. Wish we had had dinner. Short taxi ride- £6.00 from York centre. Excellent facilities.
