General Description

This Shanghai hotel was originally built as a nine-storey mansion in 1934. The New Asia hotel has a European-decor and houses 328 elegant guest rooms. The hotel was once the largest in the Far East and has been a landmark in downtown Shanghai for more than 70 years. Each of the 328 guest rooms are equipped with satellite TV channels from home and abroad, and high speed Internet access. The hotel also has a variety of facilities and services that are designed to meet the needs of both business and leisure travelers. Situated near The Bund, the New Asia Hotel is only a 10-minute walk from the Nanjing Road, and 15 minutes (by taxi) from Yu Garden. Pudong international Airport is just outside of Shanghai and takes around 45 minutes by taxi. The hotel offers a variety of restaurants with different cuisines and a front desk and room service that is available 24 hours a day.

Even though the size of the room was very small, the room itself was almost worthy of a 4.5 star rating. Location is not excellent, but it is only a ten min walk to Najing Rd and the Bund. Overall very impressed.

A good location in the older part of Shanghai, close to the Bund, a short walk to Nanjing Road and the river. Surrounding streets pretty ordinary but we felt safe and found it an interesting area. Make sure you have room high up as the traffic noise was awful and we moved to the 7th floor. Room was EXCELLENT. Breakfasts were excellent, western style and huge. Evening meals I would not recommend and they close very early. There was only the one restuarant to choose from which was disappointing. Problems with English speaking staff in the restuarant both at breakfast and evening meals. Ask for non smoking section in hotel if you don't like the smell. Some of the airconditioning is very musty. Many westerners stay there.

Good location however standard rooms are small. Would be good to be able to have option to include breakfast as part of room rate

For the price, the room was absolutely luxurious -- top quality interior, bed coverings, linens, etc. The immediate neighborhood is pretty colorless but the hotel is near enough to all the attractions, the Bund, etc., and as other reviewers have said, as long as you have your address written out in Chinese the cabs are easy and as cheap as a subway ride in the U.S.
