General Description

This property is not only one of Amsterdam's oldest hotels, but is also situated in the same building where Rembrandt produced his famous painting The Nightwatch. The hotel overlooks one of the city's most charming canals and even has its own docking point for tour boats. It was originally built in 1530 as a soldiers lookout post, hence the famous Rembrandt painting. This hotel has a perfect location and is a brilliant hotel for individuals wishing to experience a little Dutch history and for smaller groups. 080908JG. This traditional, old building is quite noticeable from the opposite side of the canal as it still retains many of its original features, most noticeably the watchmen from where Rembrandt got his inspiration. The lobby is very traditional with marble flooring and antique ornaments, although it is quite small. The medium sized bedrooms are in good condition. They feature a predominantly red and yellow colour scheme evoking a Laura Ashley style room; being very cosy and elegant at the same time. This hotel serves breakfast only and the breakfast room has delightful views over the Amstel River. There is also a small bar located next to the lobby and in the hotels former restaurant, there is now a Coffee Company which serves coffee, cakes and other light snacks in a friendly atmosphere, also overlooking the Amstel River. 2 km to the nearest station (central station), 2 minute walk to the nearest bus stop, 20 kms to the nearest airport (schiphol), 4 km to the nearest fair site (rai), 5 minute walk to the nearest metro station (waterlooplein).

The hotel was overbooked when I arrived and they asked me if I was traveling alone and I said yes but I perfer to book a double room because I like a king size bed. The manager ask if I would mind staying in a single room the first night and they would give me a suite the next night and I said yes. They also gave me free breakfast for two. I was very pleased with the service and love the location of the hotel.

Some noise was outside early in the morning. Room was quite cold but blanket was warm. It was ok to sleep there. :o) People in the reception were very nice!

We really liked the NH Doelen, the view out our window was so pretty, the staff very helpful and friendly. The room was a decent size and quite nicely decorated. I would definitely recommend it.

Old, somewhat dingy, some rooms tiny, NO AC hot as hell in summer. If you can afford it, you're much better off at newer 4 star hotel

If you stay here, you must "upgrade" to a suite to have any space to move around in, especially with luggage. Old hotel with great breakfast every morning, and great location in the city near transit. For the same price, I should have booked with an American hotel chain.

we loved this hotel and would definitely select it again. within walking distance of almost everything we wanted to visit. near the lively areas but very quiet after dark so sleeping WAS an option! staff friendly and nice, coffey cafe was great and rooms were clean and nice. we had a canal view room with a window which opened over it. room was OK for size conpared to other Europe hotels I've stayed in. will request this room again if we can get it!!!! we had only good experiences with the hotel and city.

Great location. Sure, no a/c but nice breeze off the river. Great views. Super service. I reccommend this hotel, and will stay there again.
