Just out of townThis hotel is very near the centre. We walked from York railway station through the centre (only because we sort of new the way) but it wasn't too far. Just beyond the city walls and up a road towards more residential areas. It is on a side street in a quiet location.I felt it was quite an expensive choice for us, but having booked late it was all we could get. I was not let down by this hotel though, the rooms were very clean, staff were attentive, my only complaint would be that the pillows were not very comfortable, but maybe I have a funny head. And there were spares provided which helped! The room was relatively spacious compared to some lower budget hotels. The shower was great, plenty of hot water. All in all it was very comfortable.Didn't try out the pool or the breakfast/restaurant. But I did go downstairs to ask for some coffee one morning, which was presented to me on a tray with milk jug and sugar bowl, and I was not charged. And it was nice coffee! It was a little difficult swiping into the room while holding the tray, but what do you expect when you don't ask for room service!Reception staff were efficient, polite and helpful. The chamber maid was very nice and double checked we had everything we needed when I told her we didn't need service in our room (except for more tea and sugar which she handed over to us with a smile).

Family stay at the NovotelThe location for this hotel was ideal - within walking distance of all York's attractions, backing on to the river, so we could stroll into the city centre along the riverbank. The room was clean and well laid out - we especially liked the way the bed settee provided 2 single beds, and that there was a separate toilet and bathroom! The pool was quite small but still very much enjoyed by us all. Staff were extremely helpful - especially Anastasia Poole who went out of her way to secure a set of jump leads for us when we found we had a flat battery!

good value city centre hotel!Booked 2 rooms & were placed next to each other which was a bonus. Hotel was initially hard to find but is in a fab location- v.close to city centre & quiet. Huge carpark(£5 PER DAY CHARGE IS CHEAP FOR YORK!!) Rooms v.clean & public areas good. Bar a little busy with families- some hogged the complimentary Wii for a whole afternoon/evening! Evening saw some parents plugged into iPods/books & ignoring their \"darlings\" causing havoc in the bar area- a pain with family friendly hotels I know. Swimming pool far too full of unsupervised kids & too heavily chlorinated, so I passed on this. Breakfast was wonderful- go down before 08.30 am!! Hotel waived charge for brekkie as well- very welcome so room was only £95 PER NIGHT!!

Friendly efficient welcome even though arrival late. Room excellent, clean. toiletries very good.Pool a very welocme bonus with early opening and abundant clean towels.Breakfast disappointing: poor slow service even though dining room only half full, hot food not hot, pastries not very fresh, poor selection of fruit.Let down an otherwise excellent experience. Would definitley stay again, but would not take breakfast!

Perfect for a family Great central location, able to walk to York's central attractions. Very good to have the pool so children (aged 7&9) could cool off. Pool small but ideal for children. Room worked well, sofa bed was comfortable. Breakfast was excellent, very good value for money but we did not have such a good experience with dinner. Food was OK but ambiance was missing & service was not as professional as one might expect (eg no ice bucket for wine). Overall very pleased with the stay and would use again for a similar trip.

Everything not quite in orderWe had booked a 'family room' through laterooms, fully intending to use the two beds. In the event we were given a double room, and told none other was available. It was also a room for people with disabilities, which would be helpful if you needed the facilities. As it was the high toilet seat was a little weird, and the shower was uncomfortable to use with all the hand bars in it. Aside from that, it was very very warm and there was no air conditioning. The staff kindly brought a fan, which made it acceptable. Most of the television stations didn't work, nor did the MP3 player. When I asked if someone could look at the tv, the man at the desk said' Do you need those things?' Another woman said they would send someone up, but no one ever came. Finally, the Saturday paper was missing all the supplemental magazines. It is a nice looking, clean and convenient hotel, but little things made me think I'd not stay there again.

Good for familiesWe got DBB for £139 and to be honest at that price you can't go wrong. Laurent on reception was excellent so if the manager is reading this give him a pat on the back. In fact all the staff were really pleasant and considering it's a business hotel as well with many people not using their own hard earned cash that's well done in my opinion. Beds in the family room were made up on arrival and that only happens in 50% of the hotels we've stayed in, usually you have to prompt them. Dinner at the prices they charge would have left me feeling a little short changed. It was good wholesome fare, but not £25-30 per head quality. Same for the wine and drinks charges, but if you want the whole family fed and watered in a family freindly, clean, modern hotel in walking distance to York you won't go wrong here. Plenty of car parking, outside play area and pool very nice. When you go in don't spend a long time looking for the changing rooms there aren't any. Just two cubicles by the poolside!!!

Good modern hotel as you would expect from the Novo Group. 10 mins slow walk to the centre and plenty parking at a reasonable price (£5 for 24 hours). If you need breakfast book it ahead for a discount (£8 instead of £12). Don't eat the fried eggs at the buffet- hard and rubbery.Price for double (room only) shown at reception is £160. This is far too much. We got a big discount which made it vg value

Novotel YorkThe hotel was fine for the purpose of our stay which was a cheap Easter break with Kids. The rooms were basic but clean. We were slightly put off by the number of young children running around the hotel lobby in swim-wear until late at night, but the hotel does pride it's-self on being family friendly. No real complaints, the standard was about right for the room rate we paid.

Weekend breakCheck in and out very easy and quick. Room was clean though bit basic - good size TV. When I read reviews of the hotel before we went, many had said that the seperate loo was weird - no, its a continental style layout - just not what Brits are used to - and means that theres no queue for the bath room in the morning!Pool is cute - not big - but enough for entertaining our 13 yr old in.Would highly recommend the hotel to anyone as its location is fantastic - just far enough away from the city centre to be quiet without having to walk miles. 2 draw backs - we stayed a saturday night and with our room right over reception, it was noisy in the small hours of the morning. Secondly, the heat - the room was boiling and the heating control made no difference and no air con. All the windows on the front were open wide, so it wasn't just us. A desk fan in each room would be a good idea.Overall - good base for a few days away - ideal central location, good parking, like the pool - but ask for a room at the back.
