General Description

Pencraig Court Hotel welcomes guests for business or leisure, or a combination of both! Built in 1780, Pencraig Court became the home of Sir Humphrey de Trafford in 1876, whose family stayed in residence until the 1950’s. It is now home to Liz and Malcolm Dobson who run the hotel, and their daughter Katie who runs her own business, Live Life Events (corporate and private groups for activity breaks, team building, networking – you name it, she can arrange it). The hotel offers guests a warm welcome with an informal atmosphere, traditional home-cooked food and good wines. Produce is locally sourced where possible and many fruit, vegetables and herbs are grown in the orchard and kitchen garden. All bedrooms are en suite, with televisions, tea and coffee and hair dryers. There is a small sitting room with television and a larger drawing room, with a baby grand piano which our guests are encouraged to play, and a cheering log fire in winter; French windows open into the gardens. There is broadband connection throughout the hotel. There is one four poster bedroom, with a bay window overlooking the River Wye and beyond. The family room has a double bed and single bed, with smaller pull-out bed for a smaller child. Locally, places of interest include gardens, cathedrals, castles, wildlife centres. Activities nearby: golf, canoeing, climbing and abseiling, 4 x 4 off-road driving, cycling, quad bikes, clay shooting, great walks, and back home there is croquet on the lawn.

Not your run of the mill placeA very quaint hotel, no bar area etc, but nice dinning room overlooking the rolling counrtyside.Drinks are available by contacting reception and they will bring them to wherever you are. Lounge, dinning room, outside etc. I arrived late about 9.30 most run of the mill hotels would say food was finished. but Liz was happy to prepare me something simple like a steak, or in my case Ham Egg and fried potatoes. Her and her husband are very friendly and welcoming.rooms are very comfortable and clean as is the whole hotel. Breakfast was also lovely. Things work here at a leisurly pace, so if your not in a rush, sit back and enjoy it

The Hotel is very easy to find and the directions given were spot on. As the Hotel is family run the welcome is very friendly. The bedroom was comfortable with a nice dual aspect. The views across the River Wye were stunning. The bathroom was adequate. The bed was huge but a bit lumpy but you could sleep quite comfortably. We opted to eat in and the quality of the food was superb. All appeared to be home made and very tasty. The hotel has a good wine list but I was a little disappointed that the Champagne I ordered wasn’t chilled when brought to the table but they did cool it down in time for the meal. Breakfast was very nice with the usual offerings. Overall the Hotel is ideally located for exploring Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth. If I was staying in this area again, I wouldn’t hesitate to return to this hotel.
