General Description

It was built in 1750 as a home for Thomas Cooley, a local barrister and Member of Parliament, and was originally named Seamount. Viscount Hugh Gough, a Limerick man who had a distinguished career in the British Army, renamed the house St. Helen's when he bought it in 1851. A subsequent owner, Sir John Nutting, made important changes, facing the exterior of the mansion with Portland stone and lavishly enriching the interior with walls, pillars and floors of Carrara marble. At the time, the house was said to be one of the most beautiful in Ireland, and much of Sir John?s legacy remains, including the magnificent Ballroom. At the entrance to the hotel stands a specially commissioned water feature, 'Continuum', by the renowned sculptress Linda Brunker. Spectacularly reflecting the lush interior of St. Helen's House, it is inspired by three basic elements of life - nature, space and the passing of time.

We did a flight/hotel deal and it made this hotel extremely reasonable. My husband and I had a great kinf sized bed and they brought in an actual twin bed for my dauhgter- not a cot or roll-a-way. Plus we still had room. Hotel food was very expensive- and it wasn't centrally located in the city, but it is on the bus line and was an easy trip into Dublin and if you have a car as we did parking was great-not problems-and free.

I was very happy with my stay here. When first checked in , I could smell smoking in my room and went right to the desk, and they instantly gave me another room. The grounds were so nice to sit and relax in. A bus ran right out front of motel so getting to and from city center was easy. I had a very nice quite sleep, with my window opened. I felt very safe and taken care of.

Absolutely fantastic. Staff couldn't be more helpful yet were in no way overbearing, rooms were ready for an early morning check-in and a staff member came round in the afternoon to check if we needed anything replenishing. Building and grounds are just beautiful, very very well kept. Ate lunch in the orangerie which was yummy, especially the irish strawberries dipped in chocolate! Would visit again in a second!
