General Description

This is a wonderfully elegant hotel in the city centre of York. The hotel boasts a fully equipped leisure centre complete with swimming pool, sauna, whirlpool spa and gymnasium. The hotel has recently undergone a major refurbishment and investment programme and is easily one of the best hotels in York. (GW 10/2008) Traditional Victorian hotel beautifully outset across landscaped gardens. Parking available for both cars and coaches at the front and is chargeable direct at a fixed cost per day payable direct to the hotel. The hotel is located next to the railway Station and close to York Minster. It was built in 1878 as one of the first great British transport hotels. Nestling beneath the city's ancient walls, the hotel stands proud in beautifully kept gardens and has spectacular views overlooking the historic city and York Minster. It is within walking distance of the centre of York and is close to many places of interest such as the Shambles, the National Railway Museum and York Race Course.

one night staywe booked a double room on Friday night to stay on Saturday. we choose the hotel more for the location to the city, but thought it looked rather grand on the photos and reading the discription. we were very disappointed with the room it must have been used as a broom cupboard in its hey day. there was only room for one bedside table and we could not pass each other at the end of the bed! the bathroom was just ok. we washed the kettle as it was quite dirty. glad it was only one night and would never pay their full price on the plus the staff were ok and breakfast was good. only thing going for it was location as my wife us unable to walk any great distance.

Fantastic service - lovely hotelVery pleased with this hotel. Beautiful building lovely big room - huge bed. Bathroom was very large and it was slightly disapointing to find a normal size bath tucked away in the corner as a free standing or larger bath would have been easily accomodated. That said can't fault this hotel at all. The staff were really friendly and helpful. The building inside and out was stunning and superbly located for restaurants and bars. Breakfast was delicious and again staff were excellent the small pool was empty on Sunday morning just wish I had got up early enough to use it!!. The price we got with Late rooms.co.uk was value for money. Would highly recommend this hotel.

Fantastic accommodation and lovely staffThis hotel was so handy for the city centre, beautiful rooms very large and spotless.The staff could not have done any more for us, very polite and friendly.There was a large choice of food, fruit was readily available through out the hotel.I cannot fault this place and we will certainly be using it again..

Royal York HotelImposing period building but with modern facilities. Room good (biggest bathroom I ever saw!); reception staff not great, but really good staff service in the restaurant (for breakfast).

Lovely hotel, charming staff, huge 6 foot bed & with a great deal from laterooms marvellous value. For a moderate fee we could keep the room until 6pm on departure date.

A Disappointing StayWe were given a room in the Garden Wing which is a modern add on to the original hotel. It has a feel of a Travelodge with narrow corridors and dim lighting. Our room looked like someone had alreadty been staying in it. The beds were messy and the coffee making facilities out and depleted. The room was dimly lit, looking on to a road, and dirty net curtains.I phoned reception to be told that another party had checked into that room and 'had to leave'. Room service hadnt been informed hence the untidy room. The hotel sent room service immeadiately to rectify the room. There were apparently no alternative rooms available. A bottle of wine was offered as compensation. Very dissapointing experience given the grandeur depicted on the website
