where did they get the four stars from??this is not a great hotel for a four stars. What did they do to get four stars in the first place???We clearly stated at booking stage that we would like a quiet room away from any noise and traffic; we were given a room on the small street that leads to a busy car park, and with a pub right opposite us. We were kept awake until midnight by drunks struggling back to their cars, and other locals who were having loud conversations on the pavement below. We were woken up at 05.41 by the street cleaners and their water vans, as well as by a barrel delivery at the pub!Other rooms were available on the garden side, which we did not get beause we had a discount through laterooms and they were kept for full fare customers.Room was ok, tv had poor in-room aerial reception, bathroom was very clean and warm, full breakfast was simple and excellent in a beautiful dining room, and with porcelain service. We left on a good impression. We still did not sleep well at all !!

This hotel is so hard to review as it seemed to be a hotel of contradictions. I arrived in the evening and was greeted by a man in his socks who did not appear to be very pleased to see me. He booked me in and I was asked to pay in full in advance, which is fine. I got the key and was told \" up the stairs\" and that was the extent of the directions! I dragged my heavy case up the stairs, found my room and entered. I was greeted by a small tidy room, with someone's suitcase on the bed. A quick look in the bathroom proved that this was already occupied. Back down the stairs I trudged to explain. The man in socks came up stairs with me, I was expecting to go straight to a new room, but no, we both had to go and have a look at the original room so he could see for himself. He then showed me into the 'suite', handing me the keys as if he were giving me his life savings. The room was large, pleasantly decorated and clean. There was a sofa (although it did have what appeared to be cigarette burns on seats)and plenty of storage. I was told breakfast between 8am - 9am, although when sat in the lounge the following morning I was ushered into the dining room at 7:45 am. The hotel is very old, 1700's I think and this could have been a great base for business. Unfortunately I found the attitude of the man in socks (there was more than described above) meant that the stay was not a pleasant as it could have been. Although he did assist with simple requests, it all appeared a little begrudging and like I was putting him out. I am a woman who travels alone for business and stay in lots of different hotels, B+B's and guest houses but I have not felt this uncomfortable before. A real shame as it could have been so much better.

...We arrived at the place in the evening, and I suppose the owners were tired from a long day, but the reception wasn't as warm as expected from a family run business. The room was alright - sheets were quite clean, but the duvet that was slightly visible between the sheets was quite stained with dirt. The toilet was carpeted, which I suppose led to it having a slightly detectable tinge of the smell of urine. Toiletries were also provided in sachets, while I'd definitely prefer them in bottles. We had to leave early at eight the next day, and as breakfast was served only after eight, we were denied of a hot meal. I could understand that the owners generally have a long day, and early breakfasts can be hard to accommodate, but I cannot deny that I was disappointed. However, I do suppose that I'd give them credit for at least allowing us to have cereals and coffee before we left.It was a bearable stay, but I would have expected more of a four star guest accommodation.

Very clean and welcoming. We stayed in the garden lodge which was very quiet. The garden is lovely and the grounds of the hotel are very well kept. Very reasonable pay and display car park just around the corner.

I recieved a friendly welcome and was given advice about local restaurants and the town, I stayed in the Garden Lodge part of the hotel which was very quiet overlooking the garden. My room was clean and and very comfortable and if I ever go back to Shrewsbury I will definately be staying again.

Neither here nor thereFirst the good points....Great central location with plenty of restaurants etc arround, rooms spacious and clean, comfy beds and the hosipitality tray had more than enough on it. Not like some places that only give you enough for a couple of drinks!. Nice warm welcome. Now the bad points...There was a lot of noise from outside, with this being an old building and only thin walls. I was woken up at 330am by a couple having a domestic in the street outside, and again at 630 am by a lorry reversing down the road. Also the television in the room was rather basic with only the 5 terestial channels, and was a bit on the small size. General decor in the room/bathroom was a bit dated also. Double bed was 2 singles pushed together, however one was higher than the other making the ridge a bit more noticeable. Didn't stay for breakfast so can't comment on this.
