General Description

A poetic combination of sol and mar, the Spanish words for sun and sea, Hotel Solamar is a name that captures the allure of its San Diego setting, an area rich with the sun and proximity to the ocean. Hotel Solamar is the epitome of urban coastal chic. The decor, radiating light and warmth, is only eclipsed by the sunny personalities of the staff with their bright smiles and a welcoming spirit. From sunrise to sunset, the goal of the day is fun and ease, even for business travelers, in a setting of style and comfort. As the sun sets, the daylight may fade, but the heat continues well into the evening with a lively and sophisticated scene at LOUNGEsix on Solamar Terrace or coastal California dining at Jsix. From check in to check out, Hotel Solamar is the equivalent of calm waters and sunny skies. The 235 guestrooms and suites provide the perfect space to relax and create with overstuffed chairs, LCD flat screen TV's, opening windows and a fully stocked honor bar. Each room offers welcome amenities, such as Aveda bath products, plush robes, laptop friendly safes and spacious work areas with ergonomic chairs. Adjacent to the hotel guests will be enticed by Jsix Restaurant featuring Executive Chef Christian Graves enlightened menu serving Coastal Cuisine guided by the principles of sustainability and inspired by California farms and the regions coastline. The environmental program, Kimpton Hotels EarthCare, supports a sustainable world by using nonintrusive, high quality, eco friendly products and services, including In Room recycling bins, non toxic cleaners, organic honor bar items and water and energy efficient measures. Kimpton Hotels EarthCare products and practices are based on California Environmental Protection Agency EPA Green Lodging Guidelines.

Loved it......I stayed for business purposes. I am a 24 year old women who was traveling alone. I felt safe and loved how hip the hotel was. The pool bar was hot and was filling with young people :)

The good-location, staff, room(so-so).
The pool is not much larger than a backyard play pool and just jammed with 20-30 year old rich kids. There are very few chairs and the ppol area is an ightclub for the public in the evening. This place is probably excellent if you are 20ish and want an upscale($18 for chips and dip) stay. It does have its good qualities, but we will not stay here again. We wanted some quality pool time and that was not doa able here...not to mention, inside the pool was a disgusting black oil ring above the water line...ick.
this is anice place, but it is slanted towards a young, hip crowd....

hey, I forgot to mention that they do not leave towels on check out day. Want to shower before leaving? forget it.

We stayed the weekend. Loved the lobby, free wine tasting was fun and educational. Everything was very clean, and the rooms done in a nice updated style. Did not like the level of noise you could hear inside the room. Our neighbors sounded like they were in the room with us. Their 1am arrival with baby kept my husband up the rest of the night. The beds were not as comfortable as I would have hoped, a bit mushy. Really liked to bathroom decor, robes in animal prints. The restaurant downstairs should be skipped. We did breakfast and not happy with food quality or taste. Very pet friendly, but really no problems with that, no evidence of their presence. Very convenient location to anything downtown. Overnight parking pricey,$30/night.

The hotel was accommodating to pets. Staff was very friendly and helpful. My wife and I enjoyed our stay at Hotel Solamar. No longer living in San Diego, we sometimes go there to escape for a weekend. Unfortunately, we have two dogs that need quite a bit of attention. To our surprise, Hotel Solamar was very accommodating towards customers with pets, so we were able to bring them along with us. The staff was friendly and quite helpful at all times. Also, the hotel was quite convenient in terms of walking distance to a number of places in the Gas lamp area - the Oceanside, Stingaree, Petco Park, etc. In all it was a great experience. We enjoyed our stay and are looking forward to our next stay at Hotel Solamar.

Free parking for our Hybrid car! ($32). Nothing. The hotel staff was all super friendly. The fact that we were told the $32 parking would be free since we had a Hybrid started us off very happy. The room was very clean and hip. The bed was comfortable; the towels were all new and fluffy. They even offered free amenities such as fashion tape, which I happened to need for my dress that night. The noon check out was great also. We walked everywhere.

Rooms and staff. One of the chefs can not cook fish, salmon or halibut. The hotel is in a great location where you can go to a ball game and/or enjoy the sights and restaurants. Also easy access to any of the Interstate highways for traveling. We would recommend the hotel for people traveling to San Diego.

Decor was a lot of fun! Common area was stylish and good for meeting up with friends. Doors seemed to let noise in, and hotel staff was very loud outside our door in evening! So Lamar was trendy, nice, young, not stuffy. Great location for going out Downtown. Decor was a plus - fun and a little quirky. I loved getting the Sunday New York Times in the am! The hotel staff at reception was great. Housekeeping and other staff were quite loud in hallways - not sure if this was a staff or an insulation issue but it was surprising given the quality of the hotel and the great treatment we received overall.

The location. Broken shower. The stay was great at this hotel but was a little disappointing that the shower did not work properly and wasted a lot of water when this hotel claims to be very eco friendly. Other than that, the location was great and I would probably stay there again.

"Very impractical d?r ? and they nickel and dime you to death (they charge for toiletries!). The d?r was ?gloomy modern? (very uncomfortable atmosphere). There was only one drawer in the room (the nightstand)! There were so many decorative pillows, we had to stuff them under the desk to use the bed (which made the desk unusable). The sink was shallow and splattered everywhere. Dining was expensive. Parking was valet only and cost $24/day (we found a nice parking garage 1.5 blocks north for $9/night). I checked out with $66 in extra charges, but my credit card was charged almost $200."

Great location in Gas lamp area. Room was not a 4 star room, pool noise, small, appearance. Hotel was ok. Have stayed in much nicer 4 Star plus hotels in the area and this was not in the same range. Room was small, was right near pool which has a great stereo system during the day, unless your trying to sleep. Room need extra work on the decor, and everything in room cost extra. PS parking overnight rates $35.00 for guests much higher than other area hotels.

Very clean and friendly staff. No shuttle to/from airport or free breakfast. I hated the $30 night parking fee. This hotel was very comfortable. The hotel staff was excellent. They were very friendly and helpful. The room was very clean and attractive. I hated the prices of the hotel restaurant. I hated that there was no airport shuttle or breakfast included. The thing that bothered me the most was that they charged $30 a night to park there. I probably wouldn't stay there again for that reason.

The Hotel Solamar was very beautiful decor wise and had a helpful, considerate staff. The room was small, too small to be comfortable. The bathroom was also small and the sink was so shallow that it made it difficult to use without wetting everything around it. We were short on towels. There were only 2 glasses to use. (We had 3 persons in the room) The overall feeling was very chic and intimate, but just too cramped in the room.

Location, cleanliness, up to date in amenities. Some features were well intended but impractical. No free coffee, etc. Wireless was difficult to use. Appeals to a modernistic clientele where too much expense towards upscale but understated design but which would have been better spent on higher quality furniture and offering such things as coffee and snacks, etc.

Beautiful hotel in a great location - right in the Gaslamp District. This hotel was beautiful and perfectly located in the Gaslamp District. The beds were very comfortable. We chose the hotel because of it's location and we weren't disappointed. We could see Petco Park from our room. The heart of the Gaslamp District was a block away. Tons of amazing restaurants and bars along 5th Ave. The Embarcadero was about a 15 minute walk. The hotel itself was great, the staff was very nice, and the rooftop pool/bar on the 4th floor was awesome. I'm not usually the type of person to spend more than necessary on lodging, but the extra money spent on the Hotel Solamar was well worth it. Highly recommended!

The hotel was gorgeous and romantic. the hotel was also close (walking distance) to Petcock Park, Seaport Village and the Gas Lamp District. Our room's air didn't work well (was on high but was working at low) and the outside windows were dirty. Was impressed with where the hotel was located and with the decor inside the hotel and our room. Bed was very comfortable. Close to activities. Parking was $35 per night. This is a place for people who want to drink all afternoon and evening. It's definitely a party-scene. Children at the pool would be inappropriate. It's really a bar scene there. The rooms are well kept. The sinks are totally impractical although they look appealing. Splatters will end up all over you.

The friendly staff. Didn't think the room was above average. I found the hotel a bit dark. This beautiful hotel is located in the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego has complimentary coffee and tea in the morning as well as complementary wines and sangria in the afternoon. The staff was exceeding friendly and helpful. They were knowledgeable about attractions in the area and offered suggestions for ethnic restaurants. The Valet parking was quick and friendly. Located within walking distance of shopping and restaurants, trolley lines, the convention center, Petco Park and beautiful San Diego Bay. The pool is small but perfect for cooling off while enjoying your favorite beverage. Not the best for lap swimming. The pool is located outside on the roof of the 4th floor with a bar and several options for relaxing in sun or shade. The environment is probably not the best for small children due to the bar atmosphere.

Beautiful decor, helpful staff. Noise! Staff seemed unable or unwilling to get the noisy neighbors to be quiet. The hotel is lovely, beautiful accommodations in every way. Staff were friendly and mostly helpful. We were glad we didn't have a car, as the cost per night is $32 for hotel guests. And on the second night of our stay, we discovered to our great disappointment that the people in the immediately adjacent room were there for a bachelor party - and party they did, very loudly, until well past 2:00 in the morning. As we had to get up at 5:30 that morning for our daughter's college graduation, we got very little sleep. The hotel staff apologized for the noise, but did nothing to minimize it.

Modern, clean, comfortable. Walls are a little thin, no airport shuttle. A very nice place to stay in the gaslamp area. I loved the pool and bar on top of the 4th floor. The rooms are very clean and modern.

Comfort, quiet, class. $32 for valet parking. The hotel was fantastic. Decorated in blue and brown. We even took pictures of the bathroom to change our secondary one at home. The staff was very helpful. They gave great recommendations for restaurants. The hotel is centrally located in the Gas lamp district. My only complaint was the high charge for valet. There isn't much parking so you are stuck paying it but $32 a night and a three night stay.

All day room service. Very important and good food. The bed was beautiful but the matteress wasn't super comfy. Great for a romantic night. The lighting as soon as you hit the inside suggests luxe and lush.

Other than the cleaning staff everyone was helpful and did a great job. The cleaning staff walked in on us twice and one day didn't clean the room. Excellent location. Nicely decorated. Staff went out of their way to help (except cleaning staff). I'd stay there again, despite them.

Nightly wine reception was great. $32 to park is outragous. Barpacked on saturday night. An European style hotel, on the young side, with a hip pool area bar that was packed on saturday night. Not the best if your room overlooked it, as many do. $32 to park outrageous but made some of that back with morning coffee bar, evening wine reception and free internet for guests, something usually paid for at 4 star hotels.

Want to shower before leaving? forget it.

It had great ambience. The parking cost was $32 per day. The rooms were very nicely decorated and had very comfortable beds. The staff was very friendly and willing to help us with any questions we had. The location was nice, but it is only nice if you are a business traveler or going to the Petco Park. Overall, the worst part of this stay is that the parking cost was $32 per day and there really wasn't any other choice as the street parking is very limited.

Classy; quiet; close to everything. Small rooms; expensive parking. Loved it but when I added the parking into the cost of the room it ended up more than I really wanted to pay.

Clean, convenient location andnice room. Pool was too small, no coffee maker in room andno vending machine on property. It seemed fine at first until we took showers. The whole bathroom would fill up with water. The sink also had a high faucet so you can't wash your face without continually hitting it on the faucet. We asked to change rooms after the second night because we were tired of mopping up the bathroom after every shower. They told us there were no other rooms available. I know for a fact the hotel wasn't even close to full.

Awesome location next the Gas-lamp District. It was an awesome hotel for the price, location, and superior style! Had to pay $30 for Valet. The thing was is that we were on a Harley that we parked next to the valet desk. They did not even have to park it for us. I loved it. Leather walls in the room, very boutique- ire. the location was perfect. The rooftop pool/bar is the only one in the Gas-lamp that is open during the daytime. The negatives are price of parking and $6 a beer. I got a great on the room which was the biggest positive!

New appealing boutique hotel located close to Petco Park and the Gas lamp District. Nicely furnished rooms and pleasant public spaces. Some features, such as the bathroom sinks, are triumphs of design over function.

"This hotel was nice, if you like the stiffness of Modern decor. The room we stayed in was very small, hardly any place to walk, but my parents who stayed next door had a bigger room with a bathroom double the size- for the same price!Only stayed one night so I didnt get to try out the pool, or really get an idea of the service, etc."

Good location with only a few minute walk to lots of restaurants/shops. Valet parking was $32/night. Great hotel with close proximity to lots of shops/restaurants within a few minutes walk. The only downside of the hotel is that valet parking is expensive ($32/night).

The location turned out to be perfect. Everything was within walking distance. Hotel information in the room could have included location of grocery store and restaurants that deliver. The San Diego location lived up to my expectations and more! It was close to everything, easy to walk to tourist spots, shopping, restaurants. Public transportation was also close by, easy to use, and economical. My room was beautiful. I watched the July 4th fireworks from my window.

Very trendy and hip! Non-smoking hotel and first room given reeked of smoke. Certainly a great hotel for the business traveler, young 20 or 30 something or a couple on a romantic get a way. Not a family place to be. Everyone is partying- noise was potentially an issue but we were given a room by request at the end of the hall and noise was not a problem. Beds are great!

The look and feel of the hotel was amazing. This Kempton hotel was lovely. The 4th floor pool area was amazing with friendly bartenders at the bar area. The wine hour was festive with dogs and people huddled together enjoying their time away. The location was perfect - everything was within walking distance. I would stay here again and again.

Rooms were very nicely decorated. Great pillows and sheets on the bed. Clean. Parking at $32 a night is robbery. Hotel is in a great location near Petco Park. You are walking distance to the Gas Lamp District. Staff at this hotel is very courteous and efficient. Room was great. Bed great to sleep on. The pool here is not really for swimming. It is way to small. It is more for the J6 bar outside which turns into a nightclub. The wine tasting which is complimentary was rough. The wines taste rather cheap but it seemed like nice touch (If they would get better wines). The hotel concierge was friendly but lacked specific knowledge of certain happenings. Parking is a way they boost their room price. Across the street you can pay less but no in and out privileges. Overall experience was good.

Nice location and nicely decorated. Thought $32 a night for valet parking was too much. Loved the location in the Gaslight District. Decor was very nice. Pitchers of ice water with citrus available in sitting area at all times was a nice touch. Fireplace in sitting room made it very cozy. Coffee available in the mornings in sitting room. Hotel very clean and welcoming.

Polite, service-oriented front desk staff, manager, housekeeping. Hotel food mediocre and expensive. Bartender poor, self-absorbed. Hotel Solamar is conveniently located for activities at the Conference Center, Harbor, and Gas-lamp District in San Diego. Interior is immaculate, well-kept, and front desk staff, management, and housekeeping are very polite and service oriented. Hotel food is mediocre and expensive, but there are many excellent restaurants in the surrounding area. Free high speed Internet access.
