General Description

The hotel has first rate facilities including an 18-hole Championship golf course, a leisure club with swimming pool, sauna, steam room and spa. Away from the hotel, guests can enjoy the surrounding countryside, the sights of historic Cambridge, the nearby Ely Cathedral and it really is an ideal base to explore East Anglia. (GW 09/2008) The Suffolk Inn was originally called the Greyhound and was the Inn belonging to the famous fourteenth century Abbey of St. Edmund. The building you see is the result of a careful reconstruction process which has intelligently blended the fabric of the ancient with the new building. Located on the outskirts of the historic town of Bury St. Edmunds, approximately 45 minutes from the towns of Cambridge and Ipswich via the A14 road link.

Very good hotel for Bury St Edmunds - shame I did not get a chance to play golf but you do not have to be a golfer to enjoy this hotel. Slightly lower mark on family friendly because restaurant staff (breakfast service) had a tendency to stand around and talk to each other rather than customers.

A good 3 star hotel. Staff very helpful. Stayed in an ececutive room which was huge. Beautiful view over the golf course. Buffet breakfast was plentiful- cereals, toast, fresh fruit and fruit salads, yoghurts and cooked English Breakfast. Ideal stop off for concert in Thetford forest wish we had more time to use the hotels facilites more.

Room (double) was of a poor standard and in need of a make over (cracked bath panel which was sticking out, unable to stop tap running, large crack up the exterior wall). That aside, the rest of the hotel is nice and in a pleasant part of the country. The staff in the bar and restaurant areas are very helpful and friendly; the same unfortunately cannot be said about the receptionist who checked us out!The pro's outweigh the con's, and after a couple of visits I'd still be happy to stay here again.

Main reception shut when I arrived (8:45pm) but shown to room anyway by staff from Golf Club reception. Hotel corridors felt cold and had to turn up room heating, although was cold weather! Good wireless connection for laptop, bar very smoky but bar food OK. Comfortable room, breakfast buffet a bit sparse and lukewarm in places. But OK as a basic room for the night and very easy to get to from A14.

All the staff were good and helpful but the hotel felt and was very cold. Although it was snowing the heating did not go on until the key card was in. It took two-three hours to heat up. The bar was freezing and the large TV on very loud.Having said this, the golfing guests appeared to be happy and wore thick jackets, both the men and the women, in the bar!

The hotel has recently been taken over by another Hotel group. Whilst the hotel was comfortable and pleasant to stay in, the hotel rooms and passage ways would benefit from a refurbishment at this time. Particularly carpeting, which is showing signs of age. Leisure facilities were excellent. Food was excellent. Friendliness and helpfullness of the hotel staff was also excellent.

I would say room very much like a Travelinn set up a but bland, but -clean -functional - everything in working order - staff very friendly. Restaraunt good servce food very good. Perhaps a little pricey if you are just looking for a room, and don't use the Golf course or restaraunt.

We enjoyed our visit but noted that the room cleanliness, particularly the bathroom, was not of a high standard. There were dead flies in the over-the-sink light fixture and the bathtub needed repair. The Leisure facilities needed repairs too: the poolside shower was inoperable; the paint was peeling badly in places which gave the pool area a \"ratty\" look. The golf course was beautiful and the facilities are good for golfers. Some attention to details would improve the facilities immensely.

Beautiful location with views accross the golf course. Found restaurant to be dark as the curtains were closed obscuring the view that I admired so much from the bar area??? The food was average and found staff to be young and inexperienced but would stay again.

This Hotel was excellent value for money booked through late @ £65 per night inc full breakfast. Staff very helpful, room clean and breakfast great. I would however state that the quality of this establishment should be compared with a travel lodge and although I can’t fault any of the facilities they could benefit from updating. One other point to mention the walls are very thin, a xmas party stayed the same night as us and we slept very little!!!!! but a consolation was the great view over the golf course from our bedroom window.

On the whole this hotel was great and I have stayed there again since. The gym and leisure facilities are great! Only flaw is the quality of the pillows, to the extent that when I returned I took my own!!!

Thought hotel was a little dated. The staff in dining room not really on the ball loooking for empty plates or seeing if the food trays need topping up.

Could do better!!A good price, but the whole hotel needs a good dose of TLC. The breakfast was good, but the service was poor. The room was comfortable, but the fittings were jaded.A real shame because it could be so much better.

Nice spaNice, clean hotel but needs updating decor wise.Bit old fashioned and drab.Spa facilities were nice.Definitely recommend a massage!Food was awful but we expected as much when we were handed the menu - an A4 piece of paper with mis-spelled typing. No one on reception at times and staff were not particularly friendly, or helpful, when calling for room service. Not a bad weekend but wouldn't go back.

This hotel is very dated. The girl on reception gave no info on arrival at all, she really just handed me the key card. I had to ask were to to dine and also about the leisure facility. The rooms are dated and the bathrooms need attention. The food both in the evening and morning were th worst I have had in years, it is as if they purchase the cheapest ingredients they can get and make a half attempt to cook it! I wouldn't stay here again. I stay away a lot and I am not fussy at all but this was poor.

Thehotel has been sold to a new hotel group and work was in progress to update it. However we found lack of attention to detail such as no heating in the room on arrival, nowhere to plug in the clock radio and dust behind the bed/cabinets. The manager was apologetic and arranged for these faults to be remedied whilst we used the leisure facilities(bottle of wine offered). Attractive outlook onto the golf course and self service breakfast.

Couldn't care less serviceThis hotel smacked of 'Couldn't care less!' There was no-one at reception when we arrived and no bell to summon anyone. Luckily we bumped into some other guests who directed us to the bar where the young man who was supposed to be on reception was talking to his friend. The room itself was clean enough but very tired. The whole hotel really needs upgrading. The breakfast was poor with several of the advertised items not available at all and much of what was available had run out. We had to ask the one member of staff on to replenish it. The leisure centre was also tired-the wooden benches in the sauna were rotting! We would certainly not stay in this hotel again-it calls itself a 3* but is inferior to a Travelodge. There was a distinct lack of management and service-in fact it seemed to be run by teenagers!
