General Description

Our philosophy at The White Lion is quite simple. We offer good old fashioned hospitality with attentive service, good food, fine wines, quality beers, comfortable rooms, ambient surroundings and value for money. The hotel is ideally located in an area of outstanding natural beauty and is central for visiting the Malvern hills, the Three Counties Showground and the market town of Ledbury. As well as historic Worcester, Tewkesbury's Norman Abbey, Cheltenham and Gloucester. The Cotswolds, Black mountains and Stratford Upon Avon are all within an easy drive. For the more energetic there are activities such as golf and horse riding, also there are a number of fishing lakes and of course the renowned River Severn. The White Lion is open to non-residents, so you are welcome to use the hotel as a base to meet business partners or just sit with friends and enjoy the atmosphere of this 16th Century coaching inn. Our well stocked bar is the perfect place to taste one of our range of quality real ales from both local and national breweries. Enjoy a cup of coffee or afternoon tea; perhaps have something more substantial such as a light lunch, or sample the A la Carte menu for a special occasion. A warm welcome is waiting for you from Chris and the team at reception and throughout the hotel, Jon and his chefs will look after your culinary needs; drawing from a wealth of experience, imaginative dishes are created using only the finest and freshest of ingredients.

Home from homeWe were looked after by Jon and his staff in a friendly and courteous manner. The character of the hotel and the surroundings added to the experience. We thought that while the White Lion was a little more expensive than we had planned, this was more than made up for by the charm convenience and friendliness. All in all good value for money.

As we booked this stay at the last minute, we were pleased with what was offered. However we felt that the A la Carte menu was very expensive for what was served. Also the wine list was also overpriced. But overall it was a nice stay, but we would suggest that you consider an afternoon tea option, with a little more than tea and biscuits.

Walls are thin - Kept awake by talking from room next door, and banging doors. Apart from that it was lovely.

Whilst the Hotel itself was easy to find, a lack of clear signage made the small car park (to the rear) hard to locate. On arrival the receptionist was also carrying out bar duties but this did not dtract from the friendly welcome I received. The hotel is clearly one which is steeped in tradition and its age shows in the creaky floorboards which some would argue adds character, but when trying to get to sleep and a hot and humid night, make you feel frustrated! Excellent value for money and would definitely stay here again.

Surprised no shower in the most expensive roomRequested early wake up call and they forgot...Both minor problems in an otherwise excellent hotel

The White Lion hotel is situated right in the centre of the picturesque town of Upton Upon Severn. It has a wonderful imposing exterior and entrance and bar area are very cosy. The decor in the restaurant/breakfast room was really stylish too. A special mention has to be made about the staff were very friendly and accommodating. My room was of an adequate size, well maintained but the decor was heavily patterned and rather dated. A large wall mounted widescreen TV made up for that though :O) By comparison, the bathroom had been recently refurbished with attractive new tiles, flooring and mirror but the bathroom suite itself was old and the metal framed windows were still in place. The only disappointment was that my window catch was broken and the window wouldn't close. This was particularly annoying as my room was located at the back of the hotel near to the kitchen and my sleep was disturbed by the noise from the freezer's compressor that switched on about every 30 minutes throughout the night. Breakfast was definitely worth writing home about - the food and service were nothing short of exceptional. In summary, this is a very nice hotel and I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again - I'd just ask for a room away from the kitchen.

Hotel was easy to find, Car parking can be awkward. Hotel is just a short walk from the River Severn and is on the main street of the town. The price of a room plus breakfast was very reasonable. If you enjoy the old style (oak beams, etc) then this ones for you.

The hotel was clean and tidy. However, I felt that it could do with a refurbishment in some areas.

I would have preferred a room with a shower as the bath was quite small, other wise our stay was most enjoyable and the quality of the food extremely good.

Excellent service, excellent dinner, wonderful breakfast, staff were extremely helpful and always smiling. The only (very very small) criticism was that there was no shower in the room - but the pedestal bath itself was great !!We would recomend this hotel to anyone, and will certainly visit again ourselves.
