Great location but we both felt that for a 5 star hotel it looked in need of some up dating. However staff were very good and attentive did not eat there evn for breakfast as due to the very good lacation it was easy to go to local Jamon bars for a good cheap breakfast

As a solo traveler at Christmas, I really wanted a hotel that would be comfortable, safe, and close to everything. Villa Real delivered on all counts. My room was beautiful, with dark hardwood floors, separate living room with flat screen tv, small balcony. Although a first-class hotel, it retains a personal and warm vibe, which I really liked. Staff were very helpful; when the first room I was given turned out to be uncomfortably hot, they moved me right away to another. On Christmas Eve, I returned from a day of sightseeing to find a chilled bottle of cava and a tray of holiday treats waiting in my room, with a handwritten note from the manager. Truly a wonderful experience. In addition, the hotel is a block from the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, just down the street from the Prado, and close to cafes and restaurants. I walked everywhere. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the food: apparently the main restaurant was closed temporarily so options were limited to the tapas bar and room service menus. But there are plenty of other places in the neighborhood. Overall, a fantastic place I would choose again.

Great location, although having experienced quite a few 5* hotels within both the UK and other European cities this didn't really feel like one. No spa, no swimming pool, very small bar/restaurant, no other facilities, really expensive WIFI, we both thought at best this is a high 3* or low 4* but at 5* prices. On the plus side the staff are very friendly, the location is very central with not too much noise, and they accept dogs (if you're dog lovers/owners like we are).
